Hello, I matched, but I'm unhapppy with the result, as my fiancee lives in a far away state. My question is how to proceed? I mean to apply again for the match this summer, or to try to transfer after a year. Thank you in advance.

unfortunately, the match result is binding. That means that by submitting your ranklist you have agreed that whatever programs matches you- you'll go there. It s hard to escape that bond. Read on the NRMP website - it explains it, there are waivers and the programs needs to agree to let you go. A lot of hassle! My advice would be to start your residency and try to transfer for PGY2. You'll start working agian, get some experience, get some nice letters and maybe the PD will understand and help you in your situation. Do you really want to go through the match again? and stay unemployed for another year? what's the guarantee you'll match where you want next year?

When I was talking to my wife about possible need to go to any other place from the place we live now, she said that she would see no problem to simply go to that new place, despite the fact that we have 2 kids, house and lot's of friends here... My advice: you go and be happy with your fortune... You are among those 48% of IMG who matched in this year...

So... Let's say I start, and complete a year, and get the letters of reccomendation. Would I apply to a PGY-2 position, or can I apply to a PGY-1 position again. Thank you all for your help so far...

You will be interviewing in January 2009 through March 2009 of your intern year for a position for the following year. Let you PD know as soon as possible that you intend to look for a second year closer to your spouse. The PD is not going to be happy that you are looking to leave after you have matched (first question is going to be why did you rank this program if you knew that it was going to be an issue), but should be supportive of your honesty. Many PGY2 programs don't even look at an application without a letter from your current program director. Looking for a second year position is not easy. As for looking to repeat a year? Not going to happen - it's not the course to take.
