usmle is around the corner...and i am looking over the resources i have to go through... for me, the problem has never been to understand the concepts, however, i find memorizing very painful... i can safely say that relied on short term memory to prepare for most of my med school exams...didnt really cram as i studied every day during classes...but i just couldnt memorize stuff...maybe there is something wrong with me...gah anyhow, i wanna know how you guys memorize and retain info...(besides making mnemonics, which are very effective btw)... thanks

just repeat the concepts and do a ton of questions. thats the best way to go over concepts and memorizing concepts so that they become reflex actions when you see them.

thank your for the post. i do as many qs as i can before my exams...but im looking at this MAMMOTH challenge...and then i realize how much info i have to put in my brain... a lot of people have different opinions in how detail you have to know your stuff...i mean, with MCQ type exams, you basically have to recognize some sentences here and there, think a bit...and bam, you got the answer... absolute mastery of the material would be to orally explain concepts to someone...that takes for ever, i feel... is there a common ground that one can reach? lol i guess the problem im facing is 'how do i know that i know enough for the exam'?

sometimes to memorize things, especially long and complex things, it helps me to write stuff out on a piece of paper until i have it perfect. or even take something long, like a biochem pathway, for example, and break it up into smaller reactions, and memorize the first 4 reactions, then the next 4, then review it all together at once in your head. hope this makes sense, and helps.

guess the problem I'm facing is 'how do i know that i know enough for the exam'? This eternal question I put myself so many times, and after many months I realized the answer lies in practicing many-many-many MCQ, ( you see, that's why I'm soo long around ). Seriously, you will get a gross idea, what are thy asking by doing Qs, UW is most popular for that. Other thing what helped me,when I was tired of handwriting a notes from Qs, I recorded them on my voice recorder, than played them during the time I cooked dinner,etc... The best was, when I listen to them same or following day. That helped me a lot. Just repeat the topics, there is no other way to memorization, hard and sweaty though.
