I think it shld be covered properly for the USMLE

anyways

TRUE (1)Suicide is among the 10 leading causes of death in the US ( its the eighth leading cause in US/ between ages 15-24 its the third cause after accidents n homicide)

FALSE (2) Patients that communicate thier intent rarely succeed in committing suicide( i am not sure bout this one, all i know is that talking bout their suicide plans help pt relax n cut down their risk. i am not sure if decrease the risk so much that they wont succeed?

TRUE (3)15% of Depressed patients commit suicde

FALSE (4)Men tend to be more sucessful in completing the act but remains more common in women ( i think its common in men as they complete it, they commit suicide 4 times more than women)

FALSE (5) 15 % risk of suicide in Scizophrenia ( its 10%risk in schizophrenia, 15% risk in alcoholics)

That is Very correct.......

and the percentages in suicide are so sharp...they don't change.....
except for the rank as leading caiuse of death....
it was ranked 9th and now it has moved up to the 8th ...so we r either not doing a good job at preventing it or we're just preventing other conditions better...
The lifetime risk of commiting suicide for those groups are:

schizophrenia....10%
Depression.......15%
Alcoholics.......15%
and it is a preventable condition cause
approximately 80% of patients do communicate their intent to commit suicide....somehow just beyond the scope of the exam...
ex: writing a will ( so obvious)
writing a suicidal note
etc...
etc...

Suicide Question 2 will follow......actually i doubt i'll have more than 3 and then i'll put them all up in one topic ppl cld read.....

A lot of statistics in Psychiatry.....cuz that is mostly all they got to talk about......
