I have already extended my eligibility period. But I really have not studied correctly for the last month and half. or at least to my potential. I took the NBME 4 a few days back and I felt like I was guessing on EVERYTHING. I scored in the upper 80s. But now I am tired depressed. I won't take the exam. What I wanted to know was if I don't take the exam now and reapply, besides wasting money, will the Program I apply to know that I reapplied for the test?? Is it considered a failure mark for not having given the exam at all? Metaphorically I feel I failed myself. I hope that this doesn't stay on my record. I totally let myself down and made a mess of things.
Please if anyone has any idea. I'll call ECFMG tom.

Nope.
Till the exam date and on the day of your exam the point beyond which you will open a test you can exit the exam and it wont be counted as an attempt and wont be regarded as failure. However if you have opened the exam and started then they might count it as an attempt and/or may regard it as a failed result ( not sure on this part confirm with ECFMG).

I think this is enough guidance:
Dear Doctor,
I am writing in response to your email below.
You may request an extension of your eligibility period only once for each exam registration. As you have already exhausted this option, you are not permitted to extend again. If you do not schedule and take the examination, you will lose your fee for the examination, and you will be required to send a new application and payment of all applicable fees to take the examination. In this event ECFMG® cannot process a subsequent application for this exam until two weeks after the end of the eligibility period for the examination you did not take. Allow approximately 3 weeks to process your new application from the date of the receipt in our office. Once your application has been accepted your scheduling permit will be issued.
As you have already provided copies of your medical education credentials to ECFMG, you need not submit these documents again

And dont think it as a waste of money....
Think positive.....
You are giving urself a better chance to score more...
Once u wrote ur exam and scored less ... u cant improve ur score even if u pay a _____ dollars...isnt it....
So chillax and study well from now on... and see that u take the exam in the first month of the 3 month slot u will be taking while reapplying
All the best buddy......
You can decide wether to sit or not for the exam until the last moment as the man whom u fly kissed confirmed.....

luckycharm, i also took the NBME form 4 just today and i scored reaaaaalllly bad. (When you said 80s, did you mean, in the 2 digit score? How do you get that? Coz i got a 3 digit score.) Waaay below the mean. I was supposed to take Step 1 next month and now...I dont know anymore....
Any suggestions, guys?

Well I used what my friends had received in 2008 to make the assessment.
See some of my friends rushed it and just passed. For match they struggled and ended up in fields they compromised for.
All this despite having American LORs, clinical experience, working as a research assisstant at uni. So I think they look at the entire pack not just your score, your experience. Both. And I haven't been able to get any experience here though God knows I tried.
