Hello

So I am preparing for my step 1 along with doing clinical rotations. It's tough but somehow Im managing. I am planning on writing my exam in june. But just recently someone told m that all the US students write their exam in the months of June-August.....and I was told that those months are "flagged".....so it's better to write it before June, or after August. I don't know what to do. That really stressed me out. Can someone please tell me if they know when US students write their exam, and how safe is it to write it with them? Or if there is any other information anyone has.

Thank you sooooo much

Dude it has nothing do when the US students give or when US students dont give. Its an "old housewives rumor" sort of a myth or ubran legend u may say. You can believe what you want to but there is no statistical proof of that.

I tell you what there are 2 major theories going around which have no proof.

1. The US students get an easier version of the exam so therefore its ideal to give it while they are normally giving it. Once they are done the level goes up all over and the failing rate for IMGs goes up.

2. The IMGs giving it in their home countries have a harder weirder test than IMGs giving it in US especially the South Asians.

The above the 2 major urban legends about USMLE which are like the campfire stories, too drunk to remember what happened stories. Take your pick and have fun with it.

shocked I REALY hope all these rumors aren't true!!!! As far as I know you are competing with the test and not other test takers....So it doesn't matter when the US students are taking the test. SOMEONE ...PLZ tell me that these things aren't true!!! because I will be taking my USMLE this summer and I can't walk in thinking any such negative ideas about the test that I am going to get!

Guys! if you have the tendency to believe whatever rumor you hear, the problem lies in you. NNL and Kalyan will say all that is rubbish. Now you will believe this and sleep well tonite. Tomorrow some other person will say that June is a bad month give the test and all that rubbish. You will believe that and lose sleep that night. Well, god help you.

For every individual exam the passing score and standard deviations are preset......there is no curve and the performance of others have no impact on your score.....

Hope that helps

I see.....These rumours are really dangerous to our self confidence! I don't have years to devote to this test!! Ihave plenty of other things in life to do eg: getting married , settling down etc.!!! I can't keep hanging on the USMLEs!!! I am planning to take step 1 in June-August (if I am prepared). Then Step 2 during the Fall....so that I have my scores by January 2009....so that I can apply and start residency next year...So thats the plan! If I wait to take this test in the Fall...that will push my Step 2 to next year and I will lose a year in applying!!! I can't afford that! So, I am just going to buckle up and prepare for a harder test! Yup...I will take Step 1 this summer and face all this music!!! I Pray to God that I get a 99.....Its scary but I am trying not to lose my confidence and positive state of mind. Studying hard.....

com'on royaldoc!!! you have a lot to study, so much medicine to get into your mind. so don't waste time, energy, mind-space (if there is such a wordgrin) in thinking about anything extra. just FOCUS on your books. way to go!!!! cool

you are right bioguy.....Its better to stay focused on studying than to lose our minds over crap like this...thats the way to go. Sometimes the rumours are so contagious that I get carried away!!!
Thanks.
