Hi. Is it necessary to take TOEFL in order to be eligible for Observerships? Have all the others who have done Obs appeared for TOEFL?

Thank you.

Nope TOEFL is something that might help the Hospital in considering your application but it really does depend on the hospital. They would rather have you meet in person than look at a score card on English

So me thinks its unecessary.

Moi 2 cents

While we are at it, can I attend rotations in the US before my sixth (last) year in school?

Yes, but would they ask for a toefl score? Do they offer electives or clerkships for 4th and 5th year students (not only last year)?

Well if they do ask it they will let you know through their website. Officially since USMLE dropped TOEFL Most Hospitals have been slightly relaxed on that requirement but if its an Academic institution then you will have to ask them about their requirements.

These applications take time so if you are interested then plan ahead.

All students' electives require that you be in your final year. TOfEL is NOT required if your school teaching language is english; otherwise, you may need to take it depending on the policy of the school you're apply to for the elective. Some schools also requires a phone interview for any international student even if the you're original school's teaching language is english.

And by the way, some schools like harvard do not require that you pass USMLE step 1 and here comes the rule of the TOfEL. praying499, I think the best thing to do is is to check the policy and application requirements of the school you're applying to for the elective since there are many differences among the programs. Good luck

Thanks a lot Angel. I can't really wait till I apply for the Electives to finish the requirements. I better do them now. I'm planning on taking Step 1 this summer. So hopefully that'll be done. If the require Toefl, I better take it too, now, while I have time. If they require CK or CS Ill try to do them also. If any programs allow Visiting Electives before the last year of medical school, I'll try to go for it. Why wait till last minute, what if somehting was screwed up during my last year?!

So thats the case. Thank you very much for your input.

Then if you wish go for a reseach position, because for electives it's a must that your in final year. What i'm saying is just search for now what is required so you focus on then and not lose time and many. Not all school require USMLE step 1 and not all require TOfEL. focus your attension because it's a long process. plus, yor school should be listed in florida ommission for Independent Education something otherwise you may need to do step 2. Check to know what'd required from you that's all

Good luck brother

Pass Step 2 CS, no need for anything else. Guys, focus on your exams and good scores above 90. Forget about all those staff.

hi amirhossein!
what you say sounds quite reassuring..do you have a personal experience on that?? could you share it with us?
you see, it's like a common knowledge or it is said so, that it's not so safe to depend only on one's scores. please tell us some more about that.
it definitely feels better to know that no extra activities are ''required'' to get a position..of course these increase one's possibilities but........

........maybe this could be the content of another thread. so if you want, answer to me privately or in a new thread smiling face
