I want to convert my B1 to H1b for my residency, internally without going ot Pakistan to do this. However my B1 expires in 30 days time and to my knowledge, with residency starting on the 1st of July, I don't think my program can file for an H1b application within the next 30 days.

One thought I had was to go for an extension of my visiting visa and when the time came when the H1b could be filed for, I'd be able to do it.

Another option I'm thinking of is going to Canada and getting it stamped from there.

Any suggestions/advise is most welcome!

i dont know much about visa issues, but i am in the same boat, got an h1 offer from the program, and i am sitting here in pakistan...so i will have to get the passport stamped from islamabad, which should not be a problem once petition is approved, plus there is a plus point as well...since the passport would be stamped from here, then i should not have much problem traveling to pakistan back and forth every couple of years, this i have heard gets difficult if you dont get your passport stamped from your home country.....going to canada could be risky, you may wanna talk to the immigration lawyers directly who can advice yu better....with your I-94 expiring with in 30 days, i guess its probably best that you dont apply for extension, as that does not always have good consequences....but then its just my advice

talk to the lawyers ... they will guide you much better

where did you match by the way?

I talked to several senior friends of mine and three immigration lawyers. The consensus I got was that it's best to go back home, which I'm going to do very soon.
