Before I move any further let me introduce myself:I am from India, graduated in 2004,cleared step1 99,step2 92,ecfmg certified in august 2007,no USCE ,applied to 130 IM programs and got 6 IV’s.the interviews went all very well only to result in the most romantic message anyone ever wrote to me…”we’re sorry ,you lame ass did not match to any position”I applied for scramble too but like expected did not have any success .Now friends here is the million dollar question I have been dying to get answered..What should I do?Frankly speaking I am looking for alternative careers in medicine in USA or Canada. The reason for this is that its really embarrassing being an educated person working his way to good scores but still sucking on his parents hard earned resources.I am decided to apply for some jobs in health sector in USA but have no clear idea as to what to do and where to apply? What jobs can I do ?All I have in my mind at the present is to start earning and move on with life instead of sitting and licking my wounds !I know there are so many nice souls on this forum who are selflessly helping others find their dreams. So in hope of the same I expect to see some positive answers to solve my dilemma.I know it’s not the end of the world and life goes on and that’s what I am gonna do.So all the good fellas reading this post Please show me some light at the end of the tunnel.God bless one and all.ciao

I hate reading these types of post... you really are a good, if not, great candidate. was this your first try? If not, try again.. in the meantime, contact programs to see if they are willing to let you do an observship/internship for half a day or so and on the other days, find a job so you dont have to depend on your parents (I know the feeling)... seriously, you have great scores, I wouldn't quit now. I knew of a guy who did hald days with the family medicine program in NY and when it came time to apply, he applied to the program and got a prematch.. yes, it's alot of work and yes, it is free, but you have to do what you have to do, right?

PS it also depends on attempts... I see that you graduated in 2004, but became ecfmg certiied in august 2007... that may be a problem for some programs...

thanx B12 for the prompt reply and I am moved by your honest effort to help me.I appreciate that.Yes it is indeed my first try.By as you know buddy in times like this it is really hard to remain stoical and easy to panic.well all that i want to know is that what are the future options for me for this year so that i dont end up sitting idle doing nothing.I did qualify the Indian PG Entrance exam twice after my graduation. One way for me like you suggested is to look for Observership/Internship and work alongside to sustain myself.Ok buddy accepted!May I have the benefit of knowing any other options so that i weigh all my chances and not make a fool of myself in the end.I honestly hope this would be understood in the right sense.Thanx again for the input.

By the way I cleared all my exams in first attempt.

You can apply for jobs such as EKG technician, phlebotomist and medical assistant. Some hospitals ask for certification, some don't. I've heard there's somewhere on the Internet you can send money and documents proving you are a physician and that's enough to be certified as a m.a. Google it, maybe you can find it. wink

Good luck! I can't understand what happened to you!! shaking head

Hey, I can understand it is frustrating for u, but hold on. U have gud scores and the rest of ur credentials can be improved. If sustaining self is a main issue, try for an RA. Write as many mails as u can, u will get loads of negative responses but smeone mite be willing to hire u. U could try for observership as already said. But I would strongly say with ur creds its a waste if u want to walk away from residency altogether...MPH is another option but u will have to give gre and sponsor urself initially but most people doing mph manage to get ra or ta and not only sustain themselves but save sme money in the end.
After giving ivs u must have already got an idea of the kind of program u r looking for...Try doing an observership in dt program and they r very likely to hire u. USCE is the main thing lacking in ur application. U have come a long way having given ur steps and scored gr8. Try a little more and u will definitely get residency in a gud place. Gud luck!!

how sweet of you arlete to suggest me alternative career options.see thats the kind of enlivening spirit I have always observed on this forum.the simplest way i could help you comprehend my situation is that its been a long time since i have been studying and aiming for a residency.after all that my parents have done for me i think its time for me to start giving them some real happiness.we all know how much we all have spent on usmle and eras all the way but i dont think it would be prudent for me to ask my family for any further monetary support.I wanna do it myself so that is why i want to do some kind of job so that i earn money and at the same time pursue an externship(if that's not too much to ask!)so dear arlete my prime focus is on getting a job and then think of the residency.I hope now you know what i want to convey to you dear ones.thank you very much for the sincere help.Take care for now

thanx buddy decide for stepping in to advice.I am happy that you know how it feels when you are dependent.see that's exactly the kind of thing that is hurting me most.like you suggested i have started applying for Research assistant posts through various job search sites like monster, timesjob etc.I hope i am moving in the right direction.I echo your view that my scores are good and thank you again for taking that into consideration.but hey buddy like i said my main priority at this moment is to get a means to earn somehow in USA and then probably look towards securing a residency next year. Are there other things which I could do besides RA ?I mean what do guys like me do in a similar situation?any further input is welcome.Bye for now friend

Since u r a fresh graduate, waiting another year to get into residency should not be a problem if ur finances are taken care of. I understand the frustration of depending on someone else's money but leave out the dignity of labour stuff....any job u do to earn money is good here . Medical students in the US do all kinds of jobs to pay off thier tutition.

Your possibilities depending on ur capacity-
If you have a green card
a. Medical assitant, physician assistant, ekg technitian, phlebotmist. It is easy to get in touch with a desi doctor who will utilise ur services and pay u some money for a lot of work.
b. Higher and more academic- research associate, research technitian, clinical co-ordinator, anatomy lab teacher (very high paying if u have some teaching exp). This would mean being in highly academic setting, get u good LOR , help u into residency.

If u r on a visa B1, u might want to convert into other visas to keep u going
F1- student visa- can still work. U can join one of the PA courses, EKG tech even Kaplan courses at the same time make money in small time jobs
J1- official research job (associate) . U need to be good to convince them to offer u a visa. They might ask u for a 2 year commitement. ( downside)
H1- If u r lucky , might be able to get one of the research jobs with H1.

Unofficially if u r on non work visa contact some desi doctor who can pay u unofficially but still give u a reco letter that u have worked as a volunteer.

I know its very tough to earn in rupees and spend in dollars but u can get into something for the time being

Pardon my spellings-

If you want little more money quickly, then there is alternative path and job is very easy to find.Do some courses of computers offer in community college.very easy 3-6 months.3 of house wives I know did those courses only few hours and few days a week,( i guess 2 hours /class)and all r working with decent pays.

I myself is thinking for that although it is different route from our carrier.

  #15

But you can do part time joband rest time you can do Observership or other clinical experience.

  #16

Different people have different problems. I have money but can't pass MLE!!!!

Good luck to you though. But to tell you the truth your situation is not a problem at all..People have given you good options on how to earn money. I hope you don't have a visa problem.

i think u should work on some usce and apply in the next year

if u r on the edge financially apply to hospitals that offer prematch very early and sign the first prematch offered

but really u must try again cause u have decent scores

I am really surprised that you haven't matched with your credentials. I personally believe it is too early to give up on a US residency. Let me tell you about my credentials. I am an 2006 IMG graduate who needs visa, got 95/92/ECFMG certified in FEBRUARY! (just two weeks before the ROL deadline), NO USCE/No research or publications. I applied to 76 programs and got only 2 IVS and still somehow managed to match. I know I didnt match into a very good program but I still managed to get a US residency even though I didnt even have my CS results or ECFMG certification till February 2008. My point is I'm sure luck has a large part to play and I think you should give it at least one more try. Take Step 3 and try to get some USCE before next years match. Apply to family medicine as well next time. I am sure u prefer being a family physician than an EKG technician or phlebotomist right? I firmly believe you will match next time. There are lots of other IMGs with much lesser credentials than you who have made it. Just forget about alternative careers for the moment! if you dont match at the 2009 match then maybe u can consider it. Just give the 2009 match your best shot, I personally have no doubt that you will match. However unbelievable and seemingly impossible things happen in life occasionally. If it does, then think about alternative careers.

thank you guys for giving your valuable time and energy in showing me the various career oppurtunities I have and what should i do.its unmistakably true that my scores are decent and yes this being my first shot at the match,I should not be hanging my boots. And yes the whole idea of looking for alternative career options is to not terminate the desire of becoming a doctor.its just that i need to kickstart my career, move around people and places where I can apply my knowledge and skills and upgrade myself.I know its not the Doomsday scenario and I know it will never be.but friends take it this way I have been studying for four consecutive years ...first 2 years for National level post graduate entrance examinations and then for another 11/2 years for clearing the USMLE.now I finally feel the urge within to apply all that knowledge I have so painstakingly acquired somewhere.Plus its the need to start earning which can't be brushed aside.that is why I am asking for some jobs wherein I could fit into and pursue alongside my residency dream realisation.and I know i would realise my dreams one day.but its at the moment that i seem to be a bit lost.but you people have kept alive this segment and I am grateful to all of you.I would not name anyone particular as it would be devaluing the rest of you friends. But please do keep alive your good work as it is proving to be a lot of comfort to me.All the very very best to all of you in whatever you do(just the good deeds not the bad ones thoughgrin)I am looking for a bigger word than "thank you" to express my gratitude to you buddies.May the shining light of hope and happiness always shine upon you all...ciao
