We require 3 letters of recommendation (preferably at least one from a psychiatrist), updated CV, transcript, dean’s letter and board scores. We look for USMLE scores on all steps in the 200’s and all passed on the first attempt. We may consider applicants with scores in the 190’s on first attempt who also have strong letters and transcripts. We sponsor only J1 VISAS for IMG's. US clinical experience is not required but is always beneficial to have. Graduation within the past 5 years. Interviews will begin in November and be completed by the end of January. We will fill 7 positions for July 2008. Our residents work at the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital and the Nashville VA Hospital which is on the Vanderbilt campus. The focus of the first two years is inpatient, the third year outpatient, and the fourth year is a combination of elective and forensics and consultation liaison psychiatry (also done in the second year). Let me address new information that is not yet on our web site. We have added an academic enrichment that begins in the PGY2 year once you pass USMLE Step 3 for residents who demonstrate the ability to manage their work efficiently and effectively . The academic enrichment allows the residents to begin to focus upon an area of interest and can be research, clinical, or teaching. The residents are provided 2 1/2 hours each week to pursue their interest with the support of a mentor and are expected to use quarterly meetings to present their work to their peers in the didactic afternoon. We have shifted the didactics to a protected afternoon for the PGY2/3 classes as well. We have fellowship options in child and adolescent psychiatry, addictions psychiatry, and a future option of reactivating our geriatric psychiatry fellowship. If you have, additional questions either email me or give me a call at (615) 343-3840.

Vermont Program Name: University of Vermont Program Specialty: Psychiatry Address: Fletcher Allen Health Care, 111 Colchester Ave. Patrick 428, Burlington, VT 05401 e-mail: psychiatryresidency@vtmednet.org Web Page: http://www.fahc.org/GME/Psychiatry/index.html Phone #: (802) 847-2259 Program Director: Richard A Bernstein MD ACGME: 4005011241 Thank you for your interest in the Fletcher Allen Health Care / University of Vermont Psychiatry Residency Program. We accept applications only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and participate in the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program). Our program will begin downloading applications from ERAS on September 1, 2006 for the 2007 Match. Materials required from all applicants are: • Application • Curriculum Vitae • Personal Statement • Dean's Letter • Transcripts • A minimum of three (3) recent letters of reference from direct supervisors • Successful completion of both Steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE Below are additional requirements needed from International Medical Graduates (IMGs): • J-1 visa, Permanent Resident or U.S. citizen status. No other visa will be accepted. • A copy of your current, valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). If you do not have this certificate you will need to contact the ECFMG directly and arrange to take the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) before applying to our program. • Successful completion of the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA). • A minimum of three (3) recent letters of reference from direct supervisors in the U.S., Canada or Great Britain only. We prefer a previous residency in psychiatry in your home country and/or at least six months previous psychiatry experience in the US, Canada or Great Britain. We do not have a minimum score requirement for the USMLE, however applicants with higher scores and less attempts may have a better chance at receiving an interview with us. The graduation cut-off is two years. Photographs are not required to complete your ERAS application. However, having a photograph on file is very helpful to us, particularly once you have been scheduled to participate in an interview day. (Please note that ERAS does not permit programs to view photographs of applicants until the training program has invited you for an interview.) The basic components of your application (the common application form, personal statement, transcripts, and Dean's letter) must be received by December 31, 2006. You may be invited for an interview prior to our receiving all of your information, but we will need to have your complete file before entering any applicant into the match. Your application will not be able to be considered unless you are able to fulfill all of the above criteria. Once our selection committee has reviewed the applications, we will then call selected applicants to arrange interviews. Interviews are scheduled on Tuesdays and Fridays during the months of November, December and January. Each interview day has limited space so it is important that selected candidates respond as early as possible to our invitation in order to schedule the date that works best for you. The University of Vermont Department of Psychiatry conducts a daylong interview. A typical interview day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 4:30 p.m. The interview day consists of attendance at various rounds and interviews with the Department's Chair (Robert Pierattini, M.D.), the Program Director (Richard Bernstein, M.D.), our Chief Resident (Derek Vines, M.D.), the Program Coordinator (Michele Peliel), an interview with at least one other faculty member, as well as lunch with a few of our residents. Residents may be available to meet with applicants the evening before interview days to welcome you and acclimate you to the department and program if your schedule permits. Applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in the whole interview day process. However, should you have any special needs on that date, please be sure to let us know ahead of time so we can try to accommodate those needs as best we can. If after reading the information on our site you find you need further information about applying to the Psychiatry Residency Program, please contact me and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We prefer 77 or higher on each step of USMLE 1 & 2 with no more than 2 attempts to pass. You must take and pass step 3 before you can advance to PG-2 level in our program. For international graduates one year of post graduate experience in a psychiatric setting, either as a house officer in another country, or clinical research, externship/observorship in USA is required. US citizen, permanent, or J-1 visa only, no H-1B. Any other requirements? You must have a driver's license or obtain one quickly upon starting, as our sponsoring institution involves 3 hospitals within a 5 mile radius and driving between campuses is very common. How do I apply and what is your deadline? We accept applications only via ERAS, deadline Dec. 31of this year. A complete application including USMLE transcript via ERAS must be received by then. We expect a Dean's letter and 3 other letters of reference, as well as a personal statement explaining your interest in psychiatry. When are interviews scheduled? We generally interview from November thruough early February. Tuesday and Thursday are the preferred days for general psychiatry interviews.
