If you are an international medical graduate, please note that we require that you have passed steps 1 & 2 of the USMLE without failures. Although we have no minimum score requirement to consider you for our Program, we will not consider your application if you have taken the USMLE steps multiple times. We require supervised clinical experience (externships, not observerships) in the United States along with reference letters from the supervisors at these sites. USMLE scores should be 190 or higher on the three-digit scale for Step-1 and Step-2. Compelling applications will however, be considered on a provisional basis.
The Psychiatry Residency Program of the George Washington University Medical Center solicits applications from international medical graduates, as well as graduates of United States medical schools. In selecting IMG applicants, we prefer a combined Step 1 USMLE score above 200, although other personal and professional experiences and competencies are weighed when examination scores are lower. Applicants are rarely selected with USMLE scores below 190 on Step I and Step II examinations. Competency in the English language and American culture is an important consideration. However, no US clinical experience is required. Based upon initial application materials, applicants are selected for personal interviews and final considerations for a position. Generally, four PGY-I residents are selected each year through the annual Match process. The PGY-II class is then expanded to six or seven residents each year through additional recruitment at the PGY-II level. The number of international residents in the GW psychiatry residency has ranged from 10% to 20% of all the residents in recent years.

Although we have no absolute minimum requirements for USMLE scores, the average applicant invited to interview scored approximately 205 on their Step 1.
We strongly prefer that applicants pass their USMLE Step 1 & 2 within two attempts. We are generally looking for applicants who have graduated from medical school within the past ten years, and who have approximately two years of U.S. clinical experience (either a third and fourth year of American Medical School or approximately two years of U.S. clinical experience for International Medical Graduates). All applicants for a residency position must be (pending) graduates of an LCME-accredited medical school, an AOA-accredited medical school or a medical school listed in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools. The Program Director, or his/her designee, will evaluate and select the candidates he/she believes to be most qualified for the positions available within the training program and select which candidates to interview. Credentials considered in this selection process will include:
1. Global performance in medical school, including:
a. Dean's letter
b. Class rank
c. Transcript
d. Continuity of medical education
2. Personal Statement/Motivation for Psychiatry
3. USMLE or COMLEX examination scores
4. Letters of Recommendation
5. ECFMG Certification, if applicable. For International Medical Graduates, we will accept only a J-1 visa sponsored by the ECFMG.

Psychiatry Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Do you accept paper applications?
A1. For PGY-1 all applications must be through ERAS. The department can be flexible regarding PGY-2 applications.

A2. The committee expects USMLE scores of 80 or higher on each step in selecting for interviews. Number of attempts may not exceed 3 on any step.
Q3. Do you accept IMG's or FMG's ?
A3. Yes, we have a diverse group of residents and follow a policy of equal opportunity.
Q4. Does Jackson Memorial Medical Center sponsor H-1 or J-1 visas?
A4. Jackson Memorial Hospital provides J-1 visas for residents.
Q5. What is the deadline for applications?
A5. The earlier the better, but after December 15th, invitations for interviews will be limited.
Q6. Is there a requirement for U.S. experience?
A6. Yes, the requirement is for one full year of U.S. hospital clinical experience. Most usually, this is in the form of externships, rotations, observerships or similar activities involving daily patient contact in an inpatient setting. Experience in an allied field may be considered, such as nursing, physician assistant, mental health or health technician. This requirement is firm due to the high number of applications received.
Q7. How many positions are available?

Q8. Is there a limit for number of years since medical school graduation?
A8. Each applicant will be considered individually in this respect. Activities since graduation will be considered.

FAQs About Application Requirements
1. Does your program sponsor/accept any visas (J1, H1B)?
No. Our program does not sponsor or accept candidates who have or need a visa of any type (no J1, H1B or any other visas). Candidates must be residents or citizens of the United States, or they must be in the process of obtaining permanent residency and have an Employment Authorization.
2. How many letters of recommendation do I need?
We require 3 letters of recommendation, in addition to the Dean’s Letter, one of which should preferably be from a psychiatrist. If you are transferring from another program one of these letters must be from your current/previous Program Director.
3. What if I’m a DO student, do I need to also take the USMLE, or is the COMLEX sufficient?
For DO students, our program considers the COMLEX sufficient, so you do not need to take both COMLEX and USMLE.
4. Do I need to have passed USMLE or COMLEX step 2 CS and CK before applying to your program or before being granted an interview?
Our program does not require step 2 CS and CK before applying or before being granted an interview, but we strongly encourage applicants to have passed those 2 parts of the step 2 examination before match lists are due.
5. If I graduated from medical school more than 5 years ago, but I have work experience, does that make me eligible to apply?
Due to the increasing number of applications we receive every year, candidates who have graduated from medical school more than 5 years ago will not be considered for interviews.
6. Does your program require work, research or volunteer experience in psychiatry or any related medical field?
No. Our program does not require any previous experience in psychiatry or another medical field, but if candidates have that experience, it can be a plus.
7. Does your program offer any externships, observerships or clinical rotations for IMGs?
No, we do not offer any clinical experiences for IMGs.
8. How will I be notified about whether I am selected for an interview or not?
We notify all candidates about their application status via e-mail.

Application Procedure for International Medical Graduates (IMG’s)
International medical graduates must have graduated from medical school no more
than eight years ago if not currently engaged in active medical practice. Applications will only be accepted through ERAS.
J-1 visas are the normal status required for residency training. Applicants must have passed Parts 1 and 2 of the USMLE on the first attempt, including the English language and clinical skills assessment exam (CSA).
There are no minimum score requirements but priority will be given to those with the highest scores. Priority will be given to applicants who either practiced Psychiatry in their home country or who obtained a neuroscience-related graduate degree in this country. The personal statement should be well written, demonstrate a command of written English, and provide information regarding the applicant’s interest in Psychiatry. All international medical graduates selected to interview will be asked to perform a brief, live psychiatric evaluation of a patient and a medical evaluation of a standardized patient as part of the interview process.

Frequently Asked Questions – IMG Applicants

1. Do you accept international medical graduates?

Yes. We feel that a balance of American and international graduates has enriched the residency. We have been pleased and impressed with the performance of our IMG’s both during and after residency.

2. Are there special requirements for international applicants?

While there are no strict screening criteria, there are several considerations that guide us as we sort through the large pool of applicants. First, we look for a proven interest in and commitment to the field of psychiatry. In many cases this is reflected in residency training or practice in psychiatry in the applicant’s country of origin.

3. Do we have criteria for minimum USMLE scores?

While we do not have strict criteria, we are clearly looking for candidates who have passed their USMLE with scores above the minimum passing grade.

4. What other factors are considered?

We look for the same qualities that we like to see in any applicant: a demonstrated interest in people, research and advanced degrees, etc.

5. Do you sponsor H-1 visas?

It is our custom to sponsor J-1 visas only.

6. Do you accept candidates in the “pre-Match” (outside the NRMP)?

No.

7. Do you offer observerships or externships?

No.

8. Do I need ECFMG certification to apply to your program?

Yes. ECFMG certification is a prerequisite for being offered an interview.

We accept applications through ERAS. The common requirements are:

Thank you for your interest in our program. At this time we do not have a program brochure, we are in the process of updating the information and the members of the faculty. You are welcome to browse our website, it is fairly current and can provide answers to most of your questions. Our requirements are fairly simple for applying to the program; you must have passed your USMLE Step 1 within the first 3 attempts. We do not have a minimum score requirement, but our matched applicants last year had an average score of 209.
We do not have a graduation year requirement, but you need to have been doing relevant work since the time of graduation. We do accept Foreign Medical Graduates who have a current J-1 Visa or are citizens.
You must also have completed a one month clinical rotation in the United States.

We start downloading applications from ERAS around mid to late September and start doing interviews in late October through the end of January. We do require that you passed Step 2 prior to entering the program, and may require you to take the exam prior to being ranked by our Program, although we have not officially implemented that policy at this time. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us.

Information for Interested Applicants
Our program is fully accredited by ACGME. We accept applications only through ERAS, do not make pre-Match offers, and do not sponsor new H1 visas. We offer interviews to only those applicants whose USMLE (or COMLEX) 1 and 2 scores average 80 and who have been in medical school, residency, or active practice as a physician within the past 5 years; multiple USMLE attempts and failure to complete previous residencies are scrutinized. International medical graduates will not be interviewed unless they are certified by ECFMG. Applicants are reminded that they should submit originally authored Personal Statements to ERAS.

• Letters that have been written before September 1, 2006 will not be accepted (except for Dean's Letters).

• Submission of USMLE transcripts is required.
Interview information:
We conduct our interviews during the months of November, December, and January. We have specific interviews dates set aside and we have a team of faculty who conduct all of our interviews.
Additional information for international applicants:
• Experience:
• Experience in the specialty is desirable as is some experience in the United States. We will accept experience in clinical research, externships and observerships in psychiatry.

• Applications without U.S. experience will be accepted by recent medical school graduates (those graduating within the past two years) and from candidates who have received residency training in psychiatry in international programs.
• Scores: We prefer passing scores of 80 or above, and we generally do not accept more than 3 attempts on any of the step examinations. However, scores are one component of the application and may be influenced by number of attempts on an examination and the clinical experiences of the applicant.
• We sponsor both H1-B and J-1 visas. However, it is our policy that anyone who wishes to enter training on an H1-B visa should pass their Step 3 examination before we submit our Match rank list, or be willing to enter the program on a J1 visa. We have the right to limit the number of H1-B visas we will offer each year.
• Our deadline for applications is December 1; however, we will close applications once we have filled our interview schedule.

Dear Dr.

Thank you for your interest in our program. We evaluate every application and do not have any specific requirements for applicants to the psychiatry residency program. Every application has unique strengths. We are interested in people who have a genuine interest and dedication to the field of psychiatry. Recent clinical experience especially in the U.S. is helpful. Research experience and interest is helpful, but not required. We have no absolute threshold for Board scores, but given two equally qualified applicants a composite 3-digit score on USMLE 1 and 2 of 290 is preferable to 270, for example. I have answered your specific questions in the body of your e-mail below.

We encourage you to visit our website at http://www.psychiatry.wustl.edu for more information about our program. At the psychiatry department homepage click on "Education" and then "Residency Program." Once you arrive at the residency program's page, you will see sections labeled "Prospective Residents."

We hope you find this information useful as you search for residency programs. We will be accepting applications for the 2008 match through ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service. Our anticipated deadline for receiving applications is Dec. 1.

If we can answer other questions for you, please do not hesitate to contact us. Once again, thank you for your interest in W.U.

Dear applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the Psychiatry Residency Program at Nassau University Medical Center. The Nassau University Medical Center Psychiatry Residency Program anticipates no openings until July 1, 2008. We have summarized our application requirements for your convenience:

• All applications thru ERAS, currently open.
• Part I and Part 2 of USMLEs passed after taking each part not more than twice.
• Official transcript of USMLE results through ERAS, parts 1 & 2 score 80 or above.
Above 78 will be considered for applicants with significant psychiatry experience
• United States citizen, Permanent resident (green card), or J1 visa, only. We are not able
to sponsor H visas at this time.
• 3 current (within 6 months of application) letters of recommendation including one
official letter from medical school dean.
• Official medical school grades transcript through ERAS.
• At least 6 months mental health clinical or research experience after medical school with documenting letter from supervisor (can be one of letters of recommendation).
US, Canadian, or United Kingdom experience preferred.
• Fluent in English language

Please also know that our program does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, ethnic identity/race, gender preference, or country of medical education. We are proud to have a multicultural faculty and residency group. We do give strong preference, however, to applicants who have demonstrated proven interest in psychiatry by substantial documented research or clinical activity in the mental health field.

We do not currently offer observerships/externships in psychiatry. If you require further information, please email our residency coordinator at snovak@numc.edu. We look forward to reviewing your ERAS application.

Dear Applicant:

This reply will give you answers to frequently asked questions about our residency program. Also attached, you will find our brochure.

We require the following:
- a completed ERAS application by 11/1/07
- some clinical experience in psychiatry, US or other
- fluency in English, spoken and written

We do not have:
- fixed score requirements
- graduation date cut offs

We will have 8 positions for July 2008. July is the only entry date for this program.

We accept IMGs and we have residents on both J1 and H1b visas. ECFMG is the sponsor for the J1; Mount Sinai School of Medicine is the sponsor for the H1b. For all visas, you are required to utilize the International Personnel Office at Mount Sinai and to pay certain processing fees.

We expect to receive over 1000 applications this year and to invite approximately 80 individuals for interviews. Interviews are conducted on most Mondays and Wednesdays from November through January. If you are invited for an interview, you will be asked to select a date. Please choose carefully as it is often not possible to change dates. The interview day lasts from 8:30 AM until approximately 3:00 PM so make your travel plans accordingly. If necessary, you may bring luggage to the hospital on the interview date.

If you have specific other questions, send an email specifying this request to our coordinator, Ms. MaryLuz Bermudez, bermudem@nychhc.org

Please note that, due to the high volume of inquiries, we do not review CVs, LORs or other materials except through the ERAS application.

Thank you for your interest in Elmhurst Hospital Center.

• high scores on the USMLE, with each part taken only once, are preferred. Passing Step 3 is helpful for international graduates.

General Psychiatry Residency IMG Requirements
Frequently, we receive inquiries asking if we have any special requirements for IMGs or whether we sponsor visas.
Please note that UNC Hospitals no longer sponsors or accepts the H-1B visa.
Furthermore, our program requires that all foreign medical graduates applying to our programs be ECFMG certified by February 2008. We also require a passing USMLE score achieved in no more than two attempts.
And although we have no minimum USMLE score requirement, average USMLE scores for former IMG residents were quite competitive (224 for Step 1 and 212 for Step 2).
Finally, we look for applicants with at least six months of U.S. clinical experience and/or extensive research experience and applicants should not have been away from medical school, externships, or active practice for no more than five years.
Sincerely,
