if you want to do 2 separates years (IM and Peds), then yes.... I guess, you have to do match for Peds, for IM and for CN (and go for all those IVs)

I applied for integrated programs only, ao I don't know logistics of other combinations, but I can tell you that dealing with it once was enough for me (IVs, Match.... now moving).... then I learn one place and don't have to go anywhere else...

ok i have been off for along time , but this thread is wow , the two words are new , but i have a question :
i will be an IMG in 2 years , i wish i will be an abdominal surgeon , so for my future match should i take prelim in surgery then i take the other 2 years in the specialty ?? could they require IM prelim ???? and what are the chances of IMG to get surgery residency !!
with these criteria step 1 82
step2ck 99
step2cs passed
USCE 3 months
2 letters of recommendation
thanks in advance

Hey nephrotic!

General surgery (which in the US is mainly abdominal surgery) residency is 5 years long. There are a lot of categorical programs-meaning you will start and finish your residency at the same place. After those 5 years there are opportunities to subspecialize in vascular, thoracic, plastic surgery, burns, surgical critical care and trauma. There is a trend for "integrated programs"- those programs offer 3 ears of gen surg followed by subspecialty training- I am aware of some programs like this in plastics, thoracic and vascular. But they are few. I don't know how difficult it is to get into gen surg..You might want to check out the Gen Surg match thread. Prelim surg is easier to get and definitely a good second option if categorical does not work out. You get USCE, connections , but again, you'll have to apply a second time - for PGY-2,. Or categorical - which would mean you would have to repeat internship and nobody wants that.

Good luck!

Prelim (1yr) and categorical (5yr) surgery are both paid positions...

Is it possible to start Cat.IM (from PGY-1) after Transitional year residency(that is also a PGY-1) on J1?

Suggestions really appreciated.

i heard u can't do a transitional year and then essentially re-do ur intern year during ur im residency, b/c they would overlap so much, i'd call a program and just ask them to see what they say, i dont think it wuld hurt, rite?? best of luc!!

I have a question

what is the difference between designated and non designated prelim surgery, some of the unfilled prelim programs says designated prelim only what does that mean?

Thank you

Excellent thread! I asked similar question, and not reply though. Now I know why. Thanks medicus-81 and babydoc and others for valuable input.

Two more questions: if you matched into PGY-1, a transitional or preliminary year, but not a PGY-2, what is going to happen? (reapply for next year's PGY-2 during your first year, I guess?)

Vise versa, if you matched into a PGY-2, an advanced program in anaethasiology, neurology, dermatology, ophthmology, but not a PGY-1, what is going to happen? (the PGY-2 will finally reject you, I guess?)

Thanks for any reply.
