Hi Friends. Is not studying for USMLEs a continuing medical education. So why don't PDs consider this time as your contact with medical information.I am sure many PDs do not read as much.

Because PDs are more interested in Clinical - not studying.

Hi bbb.Doesn't studying form the basis of all clinical medicine?I don't think anybody has time to be uptodate.PDs have lot to do .Do they really get time for studies? Be honest bbb.

I am being honest. Studying in a book isn't that same as learning on a patient. We all know that. Studying for an exam is no where near the same thing.

Continuing medical education is a term for physicians who have completed their training, have full licensure and it's a way for them to earn the CME that some state require to maintain their licensure.

My PD, besides teaching residents for 2-4 hours a day, reads about 2 hours most evenings. He takes journals to the gym with him. And yes, I even asked his wife if he does this....

I never knew that you could look after your patient well without sound scientific knowledge.Isn't it what we are tested for in the USMLEs or it is just an eye wash. There is no substitute for sound clincal judgement that comes only through sound reserve of knowledge and keeping uptodate.I have more than two decades of patient care experience but will any PD even look at it.All they look at is your scores and who you know.

Hey, is peeling potatoes the same as cooking mashed potatoes? You may peel it up but never cook... Even knowing how to peel is not the same as the peeling process... Be wise in your reasoning...

Coming to peeling potatoes you have to learn to first peel it and then and then learn to mash them .You just explained the reasoning justice.

dermdoc57:

You can't quantify CME of a person who's studying. But one can prove they've been to X meetings or spent X hours reading material from sites on the Internet. That's a big difference.

Don't take things so personally. Yes, the system has flaws and injustice happens, I bet many good professionals don't make it here because of misconceptions. There are too many candidates, nobody wants to take the time to analyze every single case, every nuance of somebody's cv, so they just stablish criteria and go from there. But God knows even how much hair you have, so if it is His plan, nothing will stop you. Just do your part. wink Hit medscape.

Dear arlete. You are really very optimistic and decent person with lots of patience. My point was that studying for USMLEs should not be considered as time away from touch with medicine.Everybody knows that USMLEs require in depth study and you just can't ignore that.I really admire the system of examination here but what happens after you are done with them and how the whole process of residency selections works can demoralize you.

I agree with you in everything you said now. nod Thanks for the compliments.

Did you give up? confused

Almost about to give up.You can't just wait indefinitely as there aren't any considerate PDs anymore.
