Does anyone here know how hard to get a residency at the Massachusetts General for an IMG? What do you think the minimum USMLE scores should be for neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery? Thanks in advance. Good luck!

hi fahirs, it is as hard as it gets. they don't say about minimal usmle scores, but it is understood without saying that you can't get in on 76/77. ortho and neurosurgery are extremely competitive and mgh is a teaching hospital of harvard medical school. so you can figure for yourself how difficult it is. the good way to estimate your chances of getting into program is to see how many imgs are currently in. and if you look at the ortho mgh web page, you'll see graduates of harvard, duke, stanford, yale, cornell etc., they do have 2 guys from germany though... see for yourself: http://www.hms.harvard.edu/ortho/prgm/residents.html and here's the list of residency and fellowship programs at MGH: http://www.partners.org/research/gme/research_gme... hope that helps. good luck.

You are welcome fahirs. there is no easy answer to your question. there are several excellent hospitals in boston area. some affiliated with harvard medical school. img friendly? it depends on speciality. for ortho and neurosurgery - no. internal medicine and psychiatry - maybe, if you got top scores and lucky to know somebody in the program. i don't have much experience with programs here (yet), but let me put it this way: img friendlieness is inversly proportional to "perstigeness" of the program (speciality and the hospital). there are other university based progams (other than Harvard - UMASS, TUFTS and BU). you can look it all up in FREIDA. they are not bad at all, as people say. just because it's not harvard, doesn't mean it's worse. again, i am not so sure they are img friendly for competitive specialities. Again, it is just a personal opinion. Where are you from? Do you live in states now? Are you applying this year? The best of luck!
