Dear bbb,

I have never bothered you but there is something I've been thinking about ever since it happened and you are probably the only one on this forum to be able to answer.

During IV season I received a pre-match offer which I declined. By methods of intimidation, to convince me how wrong my decision is, the PD told me a story how last year they offered a pre-match to a candidate (which she also declined) and ,according to the PD's words, ended up matching to a far inferior program. Now, is it possible for a program to see where all interviewed applicants end up matching? Even if they do not match at their program (but let's say were far down on the rank list)?

It would be interesting to know...Maybe next year, the PD would tell another hopeful about my story and how I screwed my chancesgrin I wonder what she's going to say if I matched to my #1 choice since it is actually far superior than her programsticking out tongue I guess tomorrow, I'll find out....

Thank you!

Its possible... or I think they will know where you match if you rank them.

While we're waiting for bbb's response on this one, I've discussed this with one of the PDs. PDs have many years of experience interviewing candidates. Looking at a candidate's credentials and interviewing skills, they could predict which program category (i.e very competitive, competitive, less competitive) a candidate will match to.

Program directors will see where everyone on their lists matched at. This information comes out next week.

I like using this information versus the emails/letters that I received where people told me that my program was going to be ranked #1.

First: thank you, bbb, for your answer. I appreciate it.

See, this is why I didn't play with anyone. I told only my #1 that they are the number one.period. I did not send generic emails because I felt I would be lying. Out of courtesy I sent all of them thank you notes after the interview (not in Feb, i.e. ranking period), saying they are great programs and that many young and motivated physician would be glad to join them, but did not say in any of my letters that they are the one and only! Plus my superlatives varied according to my true feelings about the programs. So I have absolutely no feelings of guiltgrin

I agree. But using this experience as a weapon of intimidation is not right. I have said this many times, PDs know that especially foreign grads like to play it safe and they use this insecurity .I think IMGs often times sell themself really short because they do not want to take the risk of staying unmatched. To claim that a person who is not playing safe to be overestimating herself/himsled and to be arrogant is a little too much. Again, I really want to find out whether I matched at my #1 and would like to see this PD's expression and ask "Did I really overestimate myself?"...I guess tomorrow holds the truthsmiling face))

Here, I just found this link:

http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/special_part/inst_o...

The answer is NO, The program will not find out where they were ranked on your list.

bbb,

on the NRMP website (as I posted the link above) it says that programs can only see the status of the applicants on their list -matched/unmatched/did not submit ROL and not where exactly they matched. Can you please clarify?

No, it's been this way for the 20 years I have been working as a PC. Why? It makes no difference where you matched, does it? We know where you went to, but not what number you ranked our program. If you matched with me, I just know that I was on your list, just as you know you were on our list.

i have a question. can the applicants ever know where we ranked(how far down the list) in the program we matched into? If I ask the PC, will she tell me this info? just curious.

Interesting question, Taz31. In fact, one of my chief residents asked me yesterday where he was ranked and one of my staff was standing near him. My answer to him was "Do you want to know how many men your wife slept with before you?" The staff busted up laughing and said "that is a perfect comparison - you never, never want to know where you were on a list."

I will never let someone know that they were #21 and not #1. Never, ever ask that question.

I personally have no idea about all this, but after reading what has already been discussed in this thread, I can tell you that YES, they will know.
