Hi bbb.

Congrats for filling all your spots.
I have a question for you... I heard that sometimes positions open up due to people leaving for whatever reason (visa issues, family problems, etc.)... I was wondering what programs do in this case? How and where do they advertise spots that open up during the year? How would I come to know of open spots as they become available? I know of findaresident.com. Are there any other sites or resources which are helpful in this case?
Thanks.

I tried findaresident one year, but I didn't find them useful. Everyone applying for a second year spot needed a first year spot. Point-less.

I get enough emails every day and week so I don't need to worry about advertising for a position. Residents also know persons who are looking or looking to change.

Thanks bbb...
Can you please explain what you mean by the above statement... sorry I didn't get it.

Also how would candidates find out about spots that open up besides word of mouth or connections?

Are off-cycle positions hard to fill or do they get taken up quickly?

Thanks.

Finding second year spots is usually word of mouth. My statement was that I didn't use "Findaresident" because I needed second year residents, and the persons I was getting in "findaresident" were needing a first year spot. It was point less for me to use that system.

Off cycle positions are usually because a resident starts late because they had a difficulty with visa. It's not that the program wants them to start late - it's because something happened.

I have notice that 95% of the time programs are looking for PGY2 because someone left the program for what ever reason.

Then you have the people that did not match or got everything to late looking for PGY1 and actually those PGY1 spots are VERY VERY few, compare to the loads of PGY2 that run away for what ever reason.

bbb-how late have you had people start without sacking them?

We've had residents start in mid-August. September 1 has been our traditional deadline. We don't like it when residents start late - it's a major problem with call schedules, over working the other interns, etc. It's really hard.

So, bbb, let me see if I get it...

Off-cycle positions can open and be filled with unmatched applicants? 'cos I was talking to one of the residents here where i work and I told him to let me know if there was a resignation for whatever reason (you know, kind of a miracle?) and maybe I could just walk to the PD's office...

But he told me that in order to be eligible you have to be already somewhere else as a PGY1. Is it so?

Thanks!

Not true. Say you were accepted into my program as a first year resident, and couldn't get here because of visa issues. Now, I have an open position and it's September, and another resident is hired. They would start my program in October 2008 as a first year resident and finish in September 2011.
