Hey everyone... This message is going out to everyone who did not match...
Whats your plans now?

-Apply again next year?
-Look for out off cycle positions?
-Findaresident.com?
-Something else??? Please specify...

I didn't intend to make this a multiple choice question...smiling face I'm just curious about what you all are doing. Do you think findaresident.com is worth it? I only noticed a few PGY-1 spots open and you can only find out the exact names of the programs if you pay and register.... Does anyone know of any successful stories applying through this service -which by the way is also part of aamc, so it's supposedly not a rip off.

I'd like to know your thoughts and ideas...
Thanks.

drvirgo and dear forum members; could u shed some lite on what is exactly off cycle positions are and how do we go about it? thank you

  #6

Off-cycle positions are positions which start not at the usual time in june/july like everyone else.... Some places may have off cycle positions due to someone leaving for whatever reason or a person who came late and graduated the program late.... Lets say a PGY-1 leaves sometime mid year in January -now that spot is open, and whoever starts will start their PGY-1 year in Jan off-cycle from everyone else who starts in july. Also when an off-cycle person graduates from the program at a strange time, another spot opens up -however I believe PD's have the option to make that spot whichever year they choose, not necessarily being the same year of the person who left. I hope i'm explaining this right.

If bbb has any input on this I would love to hear it.

Dear Friend,

I will also be trying for offcycle spots.......dont have much faith in that .but trying for the heck of it.

I will Try again for the Indian PG entrance Exams....Its crazy..But I cracked it once and I feel I can do it again,.....Any one care to give this rabbit company and study for the Indian PG exams are welcome.

See man Its like this I don't think that I can improve my CV by being in US any longer. I have given my S3 did 1 year of research, got US lors........the best I could do. Hence I see no sense in applying next year. If I try and get a PG in India at least my career will go on......If I stick around here in US My life and CV will stagnate..............Plus after my PG in India I also have the option of coming back and tryiing again.

Pipe dreams I know........It all depends on if I ever get that elusive PG seat........But I feel that there is nothing I can do here..........

WR .........live to fight another day...... cool

I totally agree with yo WR. I am also seriously considering to leave. I am not indian I am colombian, 5 years here, with USCE all the boards done, paper basic research and a MS in biochemistry WTF they want? I don't know but my life has to go on... I am tired of allways being second choice.

My dear friend FM is a good choice if you are an GC holder or a citizen.

Otherwise they wont believe your interest...They willl assume this a path for you to get some USCE and then move on.....Now That has been my experience.....Is there anyone else in this forum who needed a visa and still got FM..Please post your experience.

Hi Rabbit i know many people( my friends) who matched in family medicine with avg scores. I too just missed the chance. My scores are 86/88/ cs pass second attempt. I am doing observership in emergency department . I am going graduate from MHA this april. then i will do some more observerships and complete my step 3 by august. next time i will aplly for peds/FM/IM/Med-Peds so that i will have better option. I am going to give my 100% next time.

did your friends need visa..............My biggetst problem is that I passed out from Med School in 2001.

Dear WR

I can see you're really down. This is just a suggestion, but is there anyway you can do more clinically related research, make contacts and increase your chances in one or two years? One year in research is a very short time to do anything meaningful especially if you need to submit a paper, possibly revise before publication. You can also concentrate on presentations at clinical meetings, where you might get talking to someone that may help. Alternatively, if you do basic science research, you can usually get funded and may even apply for green card.

2001 may seem like a long time ago but I graduated before this and I did match. Plus I did not get double 99s.

Take a few days and think before acting - don't lose heart.

yes all of my friends need visa, if you have an option between observership and research then go for observer ship bcoz its much more worthy than clinical research.

Oh guys so many of us still here and hardly anything in the off-cycle list. Is there one? I was late as well but I tried. And still am no where. how do we know where to apply esp. next year? It's mind-boggling. I went and spoke to a few program-co-ordinators yesterday and they all said get hands on exp. From where? And how I don't get it!!!!!!! Not observership or externship. I neeeeed a vaccation bad!!!!! sad

I wonder if BBB can tell us better abt. this hand-on exp.I don't want to bother her! Anyone?rolling eyes

To the best of my knowledge, graduates of foreign medical schools, unlike current students, are not even eligible for clerkships/externships, per policies of most universities. Only observership. I were checking out about the clerkship, and they initially said YES if I have a medical liability insurance $1000000 (million, guys!!!)/3 cases (cost ~$6K per month) but then said no, only observership. So, it's a fight with an enemy which even does not exist.

I would say something like: "Although I enjoy the challenge of diagnostics and treatment in adult medicine, I was missing something by not having contact with the rest of the population in terms of geriatrics, peds, and ob/gyn. I would like to incorporate a wider variety of patients into my practice and get an overall knowleged of the entire patient population from the newborn to the dying patient, which is something I didn't get to do in IM. Having this knowledge base is what I believe makes a good doctor. " You can also say something about the continuity of care and getting to know the entire family and building interpersonal relationships which is important in patient care due to building trust with your patient to improve compliance and quality of care...

-be sincere... They'll know if you are b.s.ing.
