I was so sure about not matching at that time, that I put all my concentration on finding a research spot.....and while doing so, I found out about pre-residency fellowship positions in neurosurgery, but most of them required a surgical internship....I initiallly liked the idea, but scratched it right away as J1 does not permit that many switch of programs.....however I contacted the two programs where i was invited for the interview and to my surprise they both were willing to sponsor me H-1 given I pass step3 by match....at that time I had only a month to prepare for step3....and I did the best I could, and I am thankful to Allah that i cleared my step3 as well as matched at the program of my choice. So far all the puzzle seem to fit up, however unlike most others who matched, my quest for residency in my dream field is not over....but I have more than enough time to prove myself. All thanks to Allah good luck everyone

Alright here goes... hope it'll be helpful: Speciality/s applied to: IM (categorical) Med School = Europe Grad Year = 2005 Scores = 235/95, 248/99, CS pass - all first attempt Research experience= none except at time of iv which I made sure to mention when I met with faculty. Publications= none Externship/Observership = about 5 - 6 months of externships(hands on) in Canada at the time of application. No. Of US-LORs / non US-Lors = 3 Canadian LORs Were you certified by 1st of September = NO! ***BUT YES it was a problem! I noticed others getting SOME ivs (not all) with slightly less creds but many programs now are looking to see a 'yes' at the Certified section. Otherwise your app may get put on hold (this is bad cuz with the amount of apps this year its easy for your app to get lost in all the paperwork that PCs go thru... My advice: be done with your last exam by the middle of august with all your creds verified at that time as well. That way you will be certified by early September. You can push it to mid september to wait for the certification before applying but no later. Is it possible to get ivs without it? YES - I got mine in the end of October... But with the competition out there you just wanna maximize everything in your favor. Onwards... Did you have Step 3 by 1st of September = no How many programs did you apply to = 35 - yeah I know that doesnt seem like much compared to those who applied to 70 - 100 -150 programs. My strategy? I spent a month researching programs that were IMG friendly and that would probably consider my app. No I didnt apply to super university programs. I wanted a decent program where getting a fellowship is attainable. My suggestion here is to go to scutwork and check ratings of programs along with the % of FMGs mentioned per program (usually in the atmosphere section). ALSO make use of the SEARCH feature on THIS SITE!!!! I get so annoyed when people ask about programs or info when that SEARCH button at the top right of the screen will get you most of your answers!! I also wanted to be close to Montreal so I applied in the North Eastern section of the US. One last thing, work hard at finding out if a prog sponsors visas. I know its tough but you'll save money in the end... How many were Universitary-programs, Communitary-Affiliated?: Most were Affiliated. No. Invitations (specialties) = 12 - but attended 9 1. Caritas Carney - MA (cancelled) 2. Lankenau Hospital - PA 3. Fairview Hospital - OH (cancelled) 4. Rochester General Hospital - NY 5. St.Lukes-Roosevelt - NY 6. Jacobi Hospital - NY 7. Mainmonides - NY 8. New York Downtown Hospital - NY 9. Lincoln Medical Hospital - NY (cancelled) 10. Nassau University - NY 11. Lenox Hill - NY 12. SUNY Downstate (I was wait listed and only got the invite here after calling in December..) My guess for getting less University invites was probably due to lack of research exp and publications at the time of application. But, the Uni-affiliated and community progs appreciated my hands on Canadian clinical experience. How many University vs Community Affiliated invitations?= not good at math. No. of Rejections* = I'll let you do the math here. No. of Prematches = None Visa Status = need J1 Match Status= Matched! Specialty Matched = IM Spot No. / ROL #: Matched at No.1 spot. ROL length was 7. I matched at my No.1 at SUNY Downstate - University Hospital of Brooklyn (I was about to put St.Lukes-Roosevelt as No.1 but after weighing all the pros and cons of both programs, SUNY was more suited for my personal needs) Guess that means I will be working with THE MAN - Conrad Fischer! People ask about calling programs and asking about the "status of their application". Here's my advice.... Dont do this in the 3rd week of september. You'll just annoy most PCs. I did mine in early December. Why? Most programs that invite IMG applicants do so in the end of October. They give them a certain amount of time to reply or cancel. By december they've gone thru their first round of invites. When I called in December, this is what I said, "Hi, I applied to your program about 3 months ago (3 months IS a long time to wait for a response..) and I have yet to hear anything from you.. and your program is one that Im highly interested in..." they'll get the hint and look you up. As it turns out, I was wait listed at SUNY but after calling on December 20th I got an invite the next day! And this is where I matched!! Must have been due to my interviewing skills, honestly... but I'll leave that for another post Hope this was helpful! Biggy
