Cool but maybe we should wait to see where we match so we can mention if we matched at our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc spots?

  #3

This will be of great help. Can add year of graduation too.

  #4

Let's wait until Thursday - then everyone would be able to share this info.

Match Status = Match.
No. Of Interviews = 3
No. Of LORs = one US LOR
Externship/Observership = none... but had 2-3 months of research at a top notch University with excellent LOR (although it reached ERAS in october late)
Scores = 85/96/CS passed/75... Got my Step 3 result on the morning of the certifcation deadline and informed the program I got matched into who in turn acknowledged my email.
Visa Status = Need a visa (my program will sponsor an H1b)
Grad Year = December 2005
Spot No. = 1
No of Rejections* = Bazillion, I stopped counting
No. of Prematches = Zero
Some more questions we should add to this list for the next year's batch are:
Were you certified by 1st of September: No. I got certified in late october.
Did you have Step 3 by 1st of September: No, I took it in February.
How many programs did you apply to: 70
What Speciality did you match to: internal medicine

I know where I matched because I only ranked one program, so it can only be that one place. Its a good place and I'm ecstatic to have matched there. I didn't rank the other two programs because they sucked and I was getting a research job at a great University anyway, so I thought I'd try my luck next year than go to crappy programs. It was a gamble, but it paid off.

I remember registering for the Step 1 exam in March 2006. Now I've ended the journey 2 years later. What a sweet, sweet victory. Good luck to everyone in 2009!

Suggestions: please change the order, and add research experience, publications,
Add Invitations to Uni-programs, Community Uni-affiliated, community…

I believe the part of what programs did you apply to? Uni- vs Community: will definitely affect the number of interviews we can get. We all know that most of us applied to a lot of programs where we had slim chances (except the guru of course)…. If someone did apply just to Uni programs, probably he/she would get just a few interviews…compared to just community-affiliated, or combined..

We have come across to so many variables that can affect our chances of a successful match. If we could add as much info, the more useful this information will be ...

Order suggested: and additions:

I'm posting mine again under the new format because I think this is important stuff for people for next year's match

Speciality/s applied to: Only IM
Med School = Pakistan
Grad Year = 2005
Scores = 85/96/Passed/75... all first attempt
Research experience= 2 months by 1st September, running on 4 months by time of interviews
Publications= No formal, peer-reviewed stuff, but I did publish a book on career guidance as well as many articles in newspapers
Externship/Observership = None
No. Of US-LORs / non US-Lors = 1 US LOR/3 Non-US LOR
Were you certified by 1st of September = No. Got certified on 22nd of October!
Did you have Step 3 by 1st of September = No. Did step 3 in February.
How many programs did you apply to = 70
How many were Universitary-programs, Communitary-Affiliated?: Only 2-3 university programs, the rest were all community or university-affilliated
No. Invitations (specialties) = 3
How many University vs Community Affiliated invitations?= All community or university-afflilated
No. of Rejections* = Too many to count.
No. of Prematches =
Zero
Visa Status = B1 visa. Needed a visa
Match Status= Match/prematch/post Scramble: Match
Specialty Matched = IM
Spot No. / ROL #: Only ranked one program, so I matched to my first spot!

I think the thing that made the difference was my experience at working in a top-notch University doing voluntary research. My supervisor is a big name in Medicine in Illinois, and I work hard under him and he came to really like me. His letter of recommendation was just amazing and it got me an interview to a program where the PD knew my supervisor personally. Once I got the interview call, I asked all my friends here at the University to help me with interview tips. My supervisors actually conducted a class with me and other volunteers on how to shine at interviews and then I practised a lot until I was very polished, finally giving a mock interview with my supervisor who gave me great constructive feedback. I did well at the interview at this place, and when I finished my Step 3 exam in February, I asked me supervisor to write the PD a strong letter of endorsement, which he did. After he letter was sent and recieved, I "invited" myself for a second look to the program where I again carried myself well. All this got me ranked high enough for me to match with ranking only that one program.

I have to especially thank an AMG with Indian descent (I am talking about the descent because I think her proximity to her cousins FMGs made her a good source to know the hardships FMGs face) who told my oblivious at that time self the importance of hard work in finding observerships and other forms of USCE, making contacts and proving my self by working hard during observership. Also an FMG fellow I met during my observership who countless times gave me spotlight to shine and make my self visible in eyes of my attendings, who gave me awesome LORs.

Moral of the story:
Everything counts, scores, USCE, LORs, but above all I give the credit to hard work and my good luck in finding people during my observership who not only noticed my hard work and knowledge but also remembered it at the right time.

Match Status= MATCHED
Specialty Matched = Internal Medicine (categorical)
Spot No. / ROL #: Matched at number 1 choice/ UT Houston.

ROL Lenght: 8

Interviews received: UT houston, UTMB Galveston, Methodist Houston, Henry Ford Hospital, Temple University, University of Arizona, Cleveland Clinic Florida, Michigan State University, Cook County, NY Metropolitan Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital

Date of application: Applied on September 1 with complete scores but no certification.

What I have learned about the match:

1.- Don't break your head with the personal statement too much as long as it is fluidly written you'll be alright.

2.- MSPE is good to have but don't sweat it if you can't get it.

3.- It is ok if you don't apply on the midnight of Sept 1!!! (you can apply as late as middle october and you'll be ok, but do try to apply as soon as possible).

4.- Do care about your ERAS application and put special emphasis on your CV.

5.- Scores DO matter, try to score as high as possible. (above 90 and if possible above 95).

6.- VISA status DOES matter. If you have a GC or if you are a US citizen you will get more IV's than someone with similar or even better scores just because of this (sad but oh so true!).

7.- Don't sweat the little details such as what pen or purse you will take to the IV... no one will even look at your pen!!! and if you are a girl you may take a purse as long as it looks professional.

8.- You can wear any suit as long as you look polished and professional. Dare to wear something different than black, navy blue or gray!! I wore a purple suit and everyone loved it, interviewers said wow! someone different for a change! I strongly believe that making an interesting statement with clothing can help people remember you better.

9.- DO work on your interviewing skills! As an IMG speaking English as perfect as possible will get you the spot. Be nice, smile!! let people get to know you during yout IV's and and just be yourself!!

10.- DO show interest during your IV.... please don't do things that we all know we should NOT do (i.e. bring a cellphone and talk to someone DURING your IV... don't bring your cellphone or turn it off, don't just talk to someone throughout the whole IV... expand your mind talk to everyone, you'll find that you'll meet real interesting people, that's one of the things I loved the most about my IV process, also don't speak in your native tongue!!, don't yawn!! you know what I mean, just show interest, ask pertinent questions and pay attention!!.

11.- Remember to keep contact with the people at the different programs once you IVed somewhere. Send an email saying thanks, send and email before ROL deathline to let them know your interest. If you want you might do a handwritten card but send the email at the same time because people answer e-mails but they don't answer to cards (this will ease your mind, because otherwise you don't know if people read your card or not).

12.- Study the programs to the core. Do your homework before IV!! Research as much as possible so that you have interesing questions to make during your IV. I know they say that you should ask about vacations, maternity leave and stuff like that... my advice DON'T ask that!! this is the time when you should ask important questions about the program itself not money and time off!!!

13.- Be on top of your IV's!! You should be the star of each and everyone of them! Don't just answer with monosilables!! Make a conversation!!! Answer the question like you would talk to a friend (with respect offcourse) so that the IV flows!!! This is your keyword: FLOW.... nothing is better than an IV that flows like water in a river.... it should be something enjoyable for both and one answer should take you to another question. Be sure that once you leave that room your interviewer has this on his/her mind: This is a nice, interesting, mature person I would love to work with!!! and make sure this person WILL remember you!!! This is your GOAL!!

14.- USCE is a must!! Do your best to get at least 6 months of it. LOR's from US doctors are also very important, people does read them and they pay attention to what they say.

15.- Don't ever iron your suit before an IV!! (I had a burned suit the night before one of my IV's.... you don't want to experience that believe me) carry your suit with you so that it won't wrinkle and if possible bring a spare one with you at all times.

16.- Timing of IV''s does NOT matter! what does matter is scheduling IV's according to interest from the least special to the most because you have no idea how good you'll get once you get to your last IV's.... leave the best for last...meaning January. Plus it will ease your mind because you'll feel that this way they will remember you better (which does not happen but your OCD will flare up less!! hahaha).

17.- Best way to get in touch with programs is via e-mail. I got great responses from most programs when I reached them via e-mail. I even made friends this way. Do try this option, you never know who will answer and you might even get an IV!!

18.- Most PD's answer the "thanks" e-mail after IV.

19.- Dinner with resident's is a time for you to relax, be yourself and get to know the kind of people you would be working with and see the "level of happiness". Don't stress about this kind of events!! They are helpful for you and not something you should be worrying much about. Most of the residents don't have a say on the selection process and just attend to get a free dinner and meet new people!! as long as you are nice and respectful you'll be ok!

20.- It is ok to apply w/o ECFMG certification!! I used to think that you would not get a single IV w/o it but I was wrong. Don't wait for your certification!! If your scores are ready apply while you wait for your certificate. You will get more IV's if you apply early w/o certification than if you apply late w/ certification!

21.- The month in which programs send the most IV's is october, some in november and very little in september, rare in december... almost nada on january (don't expect anything to happen in this month otherwise you will be disappointed.

22.- Speaking spanish helps a lot in Texas, NY, Florida and some others.

23.- Answer to IV invitation ASAP!

24.- If you are canceling and IV do it AT LEAST 2 weeks before!! You are not alone in this world you know!! Think of your fellow match hopefuls who could benefit from this IV slot!

25.- Expedia and mapquest will be your best friends. Plan your trips at least 2 weeks before to get the best prices.

26.- For MSPE follow the guidelines on aamc.org.

27.- If you are hoping to get more IV's from a specific city and you already got some from programs in the area schedule as late as possible (January) so that if you get other IV's late (December) you will not have to make a double trip... this happened to me =).

28.- Scheduling in January DOES NOT mean you don't care about programs!! I dont' know why some people told me that id I scheduled IV's at the end of IV season programs would interpret it as lack of interest!! NOTTTTT!!!

29.- There is no such thing as an NRMP trick, getting a survey means you have matched or not getting it means you are unmatched..... NOTTTT!!! (CAREFUL: People will start saying this next year.... don't believe such BS!!).

30.- Be confident!!! People told me to grab the pre-matches I got because I might go unmatched eventhough they were not part of my first choices.... trust your gut feeling and go for the match!!! The match is not that bad!!! It is really stressful but if your pre-match is not from your 4 top choices and you had great IV's wait for the match. If people wants YOU to sign a contract with them ASAP there must be a reason!!!!

31.- You..... YES YOU will get tons of rejections!!! Don't let it get it to you!! It is part of the normal process!! Remember many great people were rejected, moved on and were victorious afterwards!!

I will keep on adding when I remember more things.

CONCLUSION:

I wish the BEST of lucks to everyone going through this journey next year!! It is tough but full of surprises and if your work hard and let God be with you, you will be crowned with victory on match day!!

After many many days of studying, days and nights of hospital work, 3 difficult exams, tons of paperwork, thousands of dollars spent, financial, family and personal problems, lost cound how many flights......after losing one flight, nearly losing another one, almost losing a train and a bus, having one burned suit the night before an IV, tons of rejections, miles of walking, one parking ticket, many many tears, only God knows how many sleepless nights and thoughts of "Am I doing the right thing?, "am I going to make it? what will happen with my life?" and last but not least a looooooong scary wait .... I can tell you it was ALL so worthed!! and I would do it all over again!!!

This is my story and I hope someone benefits from it!! I've been there, I've done that and dreams do come true!! Because God is good and He knows how hard you have worked and how much you want this! And He has a place reserved for you and all you have to do is go fight for it!! It's yours!! Go get it!!

God bless everyone!! I will do my best to stick around in case anyone needs my humble help!!

SEE YA' IN RESIDENCY DEAR FELLOW MATCH FIGHTER!!!
