can some one explain what is board certified vs board eligible. especially in context of people with foreign residency doing direct fellowships and then being able to take the specialty board exam without a residency.

board certified you did residency in USA and PASSED the BOARDS so you are certify board eligible you can take the boards

agree with Gogeta...board certified means you did your training and passed the specialty boards. board eligible means that you fullfilled all the requirements needed to sit for the boards but you haven't taken them. I don't think that a foreign residency will ever make you board eligible for any specialty/subspecilaty since your training must be completed in an accredited institution here in the US and in order to apply for the subspecialty boards(i.e cardiology, pulmonary etc) you must be first certified in IM by the American Board of Internal Medicine..here is a link to the IM board policy: http://www.abim.org/certification/policies/imss/i...
