Hi Simon, seems like you are on track. By this time, you must be scoring over 75% in Kaplan if you aim to score over 90 percentile in exam. Let me know how I can help.

Thank you veteran, commit and usmlekiller. Met with the first bump in Qbank. Did a quick review of genertics and did a block and scored only 45%!! Too bad. On reviewing the answers, found that i got most of the genetics problems wrong. I need to dedicate time in understanding and mastering these. Will also need to keep up with the schedule - challenging times. Will need to review Histo per schedule!

Hi Simon, Genetics is an important topic in step one. Take time to understand and memorize and review often. The inheritance patterns are tested often and I put the commonly inherited diseases in my "exam list" that I reviewed every day for 5 days before exam. I am sorry, I do not know how to reply in IM- my step one score was 90, step two 92 and step 3 81. Please do not ask me what residency I am doing and where.

Hi simon, keep working at it. Those genetic diseases are boring and weird. But we have to remember them cold and try to find the disease-defining specific symptom or lab test for each one of them. It is an important time for us. We have to push and squeeze ourselves hard to make the best out of this.

Thank you study499, veteran and commit for your kind words. Yes, Genetics is high yield and I need to dedicate more time in getting the concepts behind the problems. I am trying to push myself, hope it will reflect on the score while doing kaplan q's!

Your efforts will surely reflect on your scores, Simon. In your journey to the top, nudge, push, climb, rest, but never stop. These are the days in your prep that the USMLE must be the only thing on your mind. Treat every block in kaplan like the real exam and try to do better than your best so far. Revise intensely, envision your score before you attempt your block and achieve it. If you dont score as much as you predicted before the block, actively seek out why not, and remedy. Was it poor understanding? A silly mistake? Unfamiliar topic? No time to review/ think? Next time you take a block of questions, try this, Simon- Predict your score and see how close you come to achieving it. This will avoid surprises in your next NBME and the real exam. Good to see you, commit.

Thank you antidepressant. Thank you very much veteran for your invaluable advice. Today evening i took time to do exactly what you suggested. Here is my story: What went wrong? I did a block of 50 questions in Kaplan Renal after reviewing my usual sources. I thought i was good and i anticipated to score 70%. I scored 54%! This is very bad. What went wrong? I got only 27 questions right! I should have gotten 35 questions right according to my prediction. Veteran, I reviewed all the questions i got wrong and assessed what went wrong. I found out that of the 23 questions i got wrong, i would have gotten 16 questions wrong anyway because of my lack of knowledge. However, 7 questions i got wrong purely because either i didnt read the question carefully or i rushed to answer based on very few facts in the question. This is not at all good. I knew the answer for these 7 questions. Had i got it correct, i would have gotten 34 questions right, with 68%. This is what i predicted! I cannot let this happen. No one is going to give me these scores in the real exam if i do this. I have to work on this everyday. If i get a question wrong, it has to be only because i didnt know the answer. So here is my plan: Next NBME on August 17th - Real exam on August 29th! (Hopefully) From what i read in the exam experiences and other threads, i should accept the fact that i may not be able to get 99 with the time and other limitations i have. I surely can get over 90. If i have to make this possible, i need to score over 70% in qbank. NO MORE MISTAKES IN QUESTIONS DUE TO THE REASONS stated above. Strategy From tomorrow onwards, i will work hard not to make any silly mistakes as stated above. I will post my score along with the questions i got wrong because of my silly mistakes. I need to work on this, while i try to improve my knowledge base in getting the questions right. Happy studying everyone. Off for the day, will start with Hemato in the morning.

Hi Simon, kudos to you! While acquiring knowledge is important, using it is what is being tested. We are under a strict time constraint too. That is why effective question reading and answering strategies are important to develop and to keep those skills sharp. Your friends here will continue to follow your progress and we are rooting for you. You can do whatever you set your heart to. Envision. Work. Achieve. Hope you have a productive weekend with minimal distractions.
