26. A 3-year-old girl is brought to the emergency department by her parents 10 minutes after they found her playing with an empty medication bottle. The bottle had contained 60 tablets of diazepam. Physical examination and laboratory studies show no abnormalities. This patient is at greatest risk for which of the following complications?

A ) Acute tubular necrosis

B ) Cardiac arrhythmia

C ) Hepatic failure

D ) Respiratory depression

E ) Seizures

answer is respiratory depression, but i found in the kaplan says seizure is the result of high dose of BZ. can anyone explain this one??

Seizures can happen as the effect of benzodiazipines wanes with time. But it more specifically occurs when immediate withdrawal is brought about by administring flumezanil.

However I am not sure of the mechanism involoved. May any one describe why it occurs?

In chronic diazepam administration there is an increased sensitivity of the NMDA receptors, so that must be part of the rationale of this question.
