1. The week before match, keep 1 copy of the following documents ready: -Cover letter [Include your AAMC ID number, phone numbers and email ID] -CV [Prepare a good current CV. It may be different from the September2007] -Personal statement [If you are trying for different specialties I suggest making common PS without mentioning the specialty of interest] -Recommendation letters -ECFMG certificate -Deans letter -Medical school transcripts -USMLE score reports -Passport size photo [Optional] 2. If you can afford, buy an all in one fax machine [copier, printer & fax] and hook it up to your computer. If you have an additional computer it is better. Make sure you have high-speed Internet and good phone lines [1 or 2]. 3. Sign up with any Internet fax like efax.com, smartfax.com, rapidfax.com, myfax.com, faxaway.com [These are not scramble services, they are just for faster, more efficient faxing]. Just goole Internet faxing and you can use any service you like. Fax the above documents to the fax service you sign up with and they will email you the whole set as 1 PDF document. This will be useful when you want to email the documents to some programs. You can send it as 1 attachment. [If you are sure you have to scramble do all this the week before the match to avoid last minute hassle. If you think you want to wait till Monday to find out if you matched you can do Step 3 on Monday. 4. On Monday of the Match week make sure you are ready with all the above. Do some inbound and outbound faxing trials and get familiar with the Internet faxing system. Make sure you have at least one additional person to help you with the scramble process so that they can take care of the faxing while you make the phone calls. 5. On Tuesday of the Match week, locations of all unfilled positions are released at 12:00 noon Eastern Time. Printout the unfilled position lists of all the specialties you want to scramble for. If the program has a red star [*] against the program code you have to use ERAS for scramble. So make sure you know which programs you want to apply through ERAS. ERAS is available to applicants to apply to a maximum of forty-five (45) programs free of charge. Thirty (30) of those programs can be new programs and fifteen (15) can be programs to which the applicant has applied during the ERAS season. The applicant must meet the following criteria: *Must have participated in ERAS during the regular season. This means you must have applied to (and paid for) at least one program. *Account must be paid in full no less than two weeks prior to the Scramble period. 6. For the remaining programs ask your friend to start faxing and emailing your documents. The NRMP list will not have the phone number and fax number for all the programs. You should log on to ERAS and search with the AAMC number that is given and you will get the details. You start calling the programs and talk to them. Most of the phone lines and fax lines are busy. You may not get to talk to anyone but if you do try to sound convincing and confident. The fax service will update you via email with information on the numbers they have sent the fax successfully and the numbers you need to try again. 7. This process will go on for 2 days [Tuesday and Wednesday]. On Thursday, Match Day! Match results for applicants are posted to Web site at 1:00 pm eastern time. I hope this helps everyone who is wondering how to go about it. If anybody has any additions to it or some better ideas please do write in. Good Luck to All.

thanks. how soon and by what means do the programs tell the candidates that they are willing to take them ? how practical is it to scramble sitting in a different country ? i have managed a cheap calling solution but still one major disadvantage i see is that programs wont be able to call me back. do any programs ask to appear personally for an interview the same or next day ? does it ever happen that one gets a position just based on his CV without even an interview ? or most programs would want a phone conversation before choosing ? bbb your inputs would be appreciated here too.

how soon and by what means do the programs tell the candidates that they are willing to take them ? Varies from program to program. Some want immediate, some take their time... how practical is it to scramble sitting in a different country ? i have managed a cheap calling solution but still one major disadvantage i see is that programs wont be able to call me back. Why can't I call you overseas? Yes, it's a disadvantage - but if your credentials are great, why wouldn't a program call. do any programs ask to appear personally for an interview the same or next day ? Many programs will do a pre-phone interview, then ask for personal interviews. Depends on the program if they will wait for you to travel from overseas. does it ever happen that one gets a position just based on his CV without even an interview ? or most programs would want a phone conversation before choosing ? Most programs would want a minimum of a phone interview. Even that is very scarey.....

These last few days before the match are actually slow. I've edited a manual for our chief residents, edited some LORs for residents looking for fellowships, proofed some manuscripts for one of my chiefs, had some of my art accepted for publication in a national magazine and a book. I've fed the dogs, petted all of them, vacuumed, still need to do the facilities, given my PD a hard time, confirmed a dental appointment, a salon appointment, and sorted socks. p.s. I had yogurt for breakfast and quantities of coffee, and a chicken cesar salad for lunch. p.s.s. I think that I would have to stop posting here and other places if I published a book. But it might be interesting......

Thanks a lot for this useful post... I have a question to you about the statement you've made regarding the red-dotted programs... Are you sure about this? What is the source of this info? In the last message from NRMP they say that the applicants HAVE TO contact programs to learn which way they prefer... They said that the programs are advised to compose voice record instructions on their answering machines or an auto-reply message that would contain the instructions. SO, PLEASE CLARIFY THE SOURCE OF YOUR INFORMATION. Thank you

drswapna wrote: i could not get the table in a proper order, but I hope you got your answer Man, I think you info is outdated, with respect to red stars... Here is the advisory for this year: SCRAMBLE ADVISORY FOR APPLICANTS This Advisory is to educate applicants about how ERAS may be used during the 2008 Scramble period. Receiving this Advisory does not imply anything whatsoever about your NRMP Match status. All registered ERAS users will receive this notice. It should be used as a resource in preparation for the Scramble period, should you need it. • Contact Programs: If you are unmatched, you should contact the program director of programs with unfilled position(s) before sending any information. Program directors have been advised to post a voicemail or reply e-mail message outlining the necessary steps you need to apply to their program. The instructions should include whether they wish to receive documents via ERAS or e-mail. • Scramble Dates: This year's Scramble runs from 12:00 noon ET on Tuesday, March 18th to 12 noon ET on Thursday, March 20th. During this time, the Scramble version of ERAS will be available. Note: The MyERAS Web site will be open prior to 12 noon ET on Tuesday, March 18th to allow applicants to prepare their application for Scramble. However, any programs applied to before Scramble starts will incur the regular ERAS fee. • Before Scramble: In the next few days, you should access MyERAS and confirm that the information in your Profile is up-to-date. You may also want to look at your Personal Statement to see if you should create a new one for Scramble. • Computer Access: Use Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher to access MyERAS. If you are a Mac user, please use Firefox as your browser; we do not recommend using Safari for Macs. • Scramble ERAS: During Scramble, applicants may apply to a maximum of thirty (30) new programs and fifteen (15) programs to which you’ve already applied free of charge from 12 noon ET March 18th – 12 noon ET March 20th. Sending ERAS applications, during Scramble, is free if applicants meet the following criteria: must have participated in ERAS during the regular season (applied to and paid for at least one program) and their account must be paid in full no less than two weeks prior to the Scramble period. Note: 30 new programs and 15 reapply programs is an absolute maximum – applicants will not be able to apply to more than that during the Scramble period. • ERAS Fees: Applicants with outstanding balances will not be allowed access to ERAS during Scramble. Check your account history for confirmation that previously submitted payment(s) have been received and processed. There will be no ERAS fees charged for applications transmitted during the ERAS Scramble period. If, however, you access MyERAS before 12 noon ET on Tuesday and you apply to programs before 12 noon ET, you will be charged for those programs. Do not attempt to preempt the Scramble system. Note: 45 is an absolute maximum for programs (30 new and 15 reapply) to which you may apply - you will not be able to apply to more than 45 programs via ERAS during the Scramble period, even if you are willing to pay a fee to do so. • Applying to Programs: During Scramble, select the programs to which you wish to apply. The NRMP's unfilled list will have the ACGME ID for the unfilled programs. Use the ACGME ID to search for and select programs quickly. The selected programs will appear on your ‘Programs Selected’ list. Select the 'Apply to Programs' tab for a list of selected programs to send your application. Then, click the ‘Apply to Programs’ button. You will see an invoice with zero ERAS fees. Be sure to make any appropriate document assignment changes prior to applying, especially if you have special Scramble documents you would like to send. Once you see these programs on your "Programs Applied To" list, you know your applications have been transmitted. • Reapplying to Programs: If you wish to reapply to a program during Scramble that you have previously applied to, click on the “Reapply to Programs” tab. You will then need to click on the check boxes in front of the programs where you wish to reapply. Once you click on the “Reapply to Programs” button the applicable programs will show up under the “Programs Applied to” tab with a description of “reapplied” next to the program. • USMLE/COMLEX Transcripts: The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) will process transcript requETs received during the Scramble period. Applicants who have not previously requETed electronic transmission of USMLE/COMLEX transcripts through ERAS will be charged the $50 NBME/NBOME/ECFMG fee. Applicants who have already transmitted scores via ERAS will not incur additional transcript fees. • Applicant Document Tracking System (ADTS): During Scramble, there will be a special Scramble Edition of ADTS called ADTS Lite. It will not have all the functionality of the regular ADTS; however it will provide the necessary information to let you know whether programs have downloaded your application. Special Scramble Rules apply: ° ADTS Lite will be available from 12 noon ET – 6:00 pm ET on Tuesday, March 18th. ° You will only be able to see the disposition of applications transmitted during Scramble only (beginning 12 noon ET on Tuesday), including the 15 programs to which you reapply. ° Since all documents are generally transmitted together, individual documents will not be displayed. ° You will have the ability to view two options: “Application has been uploaded to the ERAS PostOffice” and “Application has been downloaded by the program”. ° Normal ADTS functionality resumes after 6 pm on Tuesday, March 18th. • Post Scramble: At 12 noon ET on Thursday, March 20th, the ERAS Scramble period will end. Any programs applied to after that time will incur regular ERAS fees. If you do not locate a residency position during Scramble, consider our sister service, FindAResident (FAR). A number of programs will enter their post-match vacancies into the FAR service. FAR is an online service that brings together programs looking to fill positions with applicants seeking positions. Residency programs advertise post-match vacancies and applicants post their resumes for review. FAR allows you to search for open positions and notify programs of your interET online. Find out more about this service at www.aamc.org/students/findaresident. For more information, visit our Preparing for Scramble Web page at: http://www.aamc.org/students/eras/info_scramble/s.... Please contact the ERAS HelpDesk at (202) 828-0413, M-F from 8am – 6pm ET, or at myeras@aamc.org with your quETions about MyERAS. Contact the NRMP at (202) 828-0566 with your National Resident Matching Program quETions. ©

If the program wants information faxed, then fax it to them. Everything that will strengthen your app against others. Only to programs that want information faxed.

Justice- Thank you very much for the update. I have not received this email and hence was not aware of it. So on 18th we should just start calling the programs first and depending on their response we can either apply thro ERAS or via Fax or email. Kashdoc- You have to send all the documents, not just the cover letter. You cannot apply as many as you want through ERAS. You can use ERAS for only 30 new and 15 reapply

Hi everyone... unfortunately, I did not match and will play the scramble gamble for two days I have two questions: - We should not apply to any program until we call them and learn what is their preferred method, ERAS or Fax/email? - LOR for which we waived the right to see will not be available to send. In my case I will have none. How will that affect my situation? Any thoughts? bbb? THANK YOU!

Wait for the answer to #1.

Thank you bbb! I had the people who wrote the letters send them in DOC format to one of them, that person will be happy to send all letters with his email address to the programs that may request LOR. I still do not see them, and they can get'em if they want. THANK YOU!
