Kaplan Qbank USMLE

preparation time: jan 10th-march 3
Resources:
Kaplan, Goljan High Yield, Goljan Audio, FA, Lippincotts Pharmacology, Robbins Path text, Langman's Medical embryology, BRS physio, BRS Gross Anatomy, Cliniccal Microbiology Made ridiculously Simple, FIX High Yield Neuro, Flashcards: BRS pharm, BRS path.

Most useful resources: FA, Kaplan books, Goljan, Fix Neuro

Websites: WEbpath, google (for searching out obscure things lol, )

NMBE test 1: feb 20th (560=232)
NMBE test 2: mar 1 (620=244)
USMLE 150CD (88/92/94 = 92%)

UW: 68% (75% completed)
Kaplan Q-bank: 64% (40% completed)

I switched to USMLE world about halfway through my studying because I found Q-bank was just testing me on memorization of random information, instead of integration the way UW was. This proved to be the correct choice because there was little Q-bank stule questions on my test, the vast majority of questions were UW style ntegrations.

TIPS for studying:
1) Do questions every day, I did 50 in morning and 50 at night and as test got closer I would do 100 in morning and 50-100 at night. I found this allowed me to track my progress AND identify weak areas.
2) study 2-3 subjects per day instead of just crammign one at a time so that everything is integrated and stays fresh. For example I did pharm every morning and path every afternoon for a week and a half instead of doing them one at a time each for 4-5 days.
3) Get lots of sleep. Tired studying days are wasted studying days in my opinion. Look at sleeping in as opportunity to rest your mind, not somethign to stress about that u missed your morning 100Q session.
4) Use Goljan audio. REALLY good source of VERY HIGH YIELD INFO.
5) Pay attention to your weaker areas in NMBE, UW, and Kaplan Q bank as the test approaches and FOCUS on those AREAS. I think this was biggest reason my score from NMBE 1 increased to what i got on NMBE2.

Most heavily stressed on my USMLE
1) General principles Must absolutely know basic pathology stuff liek inflammation, oncology, the cell cycle and apoptosis. I guess the first few sections in Robbins were probabably gold with a great summary of them doen by Kaplan General path section in the book.
2) Respiratory system: my test hasd tons of FEV1/FVC type questions and how they change in the different diseases. Also sarcodiosis risk factors and lung cancer photos were big for me. And the lugn cancer photos they had were not your run of the mill keratin pearl type squamous cancers they were tough ones. Even the ethics type questions for me wwere "how would you best tell a patient he has lung cancer?"
3) Vitamins. Alot of their toxicities, Mechanism of actions, and deficiencies. there were 2 questions on INH causing Vit B6 deficiency and what this would lead to. (peripheral Neuropathy I said.)
4) Embryo: I felt the questions here were very fair and there was alot of them. Kaplan Embryo is decent and so is FA for a review, but many of the tested concepts required understanding: I reccomend Langman's medical embryology for this.

Lowest yield:
1) Anatomy: I studied real hard for this and it was low yield. I think FA anatomy is sufficient plus spend a little time on the brachial and lumbar plexus nerves and which come from which segments. Also innervation of hands and feet (sensory and motor)

Now Ill await my mark and post it when I recieve it to see if these tips/advice/studying habits actually paid off for me LOL
