Everbody has been ranting abt not trusting or trusting pds words..We rank programs according to how we like and not how gud r our chances in a program. And programs rank almost all the candidates they iv to get the safety net. So I dont understand wht difference will it make to us or to the program if they tell us they will rank us high. Also some programs tell this to every applicant, i dont get their playing such a game...I know this is an extremely stupid q but i was curious..

Because everyone likes to treated as someone special! I might be interviewed at a big shot university program and they might rank me only as 'back-up' but if they are very open about it, I might feel that they didnt think I was not good enough for them on interview day and I dont want be treated like a 2nd class resident (who got in just because someone dropped out ) for the next 3 years Although I can rank it as no.1 even if I have no chance, if they are very open about the fact that I have no chance then I might be offended and rank another program which treated me better on interview day and welcomes me If you think that thats stupid to be offended by such things, look at the number of posts complaining about rejection letters My guess is that if the program decided to interview you, in most cases they would want to rank you (unless you really mess up your interview) and they can only be sure of getting a candidate only if the candidate is happy with the program & ranks the program high- so they play the game to completion- Doesnt make much sense from the programs point of view to spend time interviewing a candidate and showing off their facilities and finally mess it up by telling the candidate that he is only a back up!

Would you prefer a PD to tell you that you suck and you have no chance of making it ? Sure, it'd be more honest.......but remember, you went through med school, countless exams, and hard struggles to get where you are. I think you deserve a lot more respect than a casual "sorry, you're not what we're looking for". I for one respect that PDs take a diplomatic approach and lie to you.......
