Hey guys... I have been trying to find this information out for the longest time and can't seem to find it anywhere, hopefully someone on this forum can help. I know all about the different types of fellowships IM can get after residency. My question is, what percentage of IM graduates actually apply and obtain fellowships??? Do most practice primary care? Nothing is wrong with primary care, I'm just saying, from what I read and those who I have spoken to, they paint the picture that getting a fellowships after residency is relatively easy, but in my opinion, I don't think it's easy at all. Please answer someone. Thanks. You guys are very helpful.

I dont know where I read this, but I think the stats are that 60-65% of IM residents go on to specialize. The rest decide to go to primary care, hospitalist, research, etc. As for obtaining fellowships, really depends on the where you go to do residency and what specialty you want to specialize in. For example, endocrin and rheum are considered easier fellowships to acquire, whereas cardio and GI are difficult.
