65 year old man, 1 week confusion, disorientation, talking to self, delusional ideas about his landlord, incontinence, mental exam difficult because he can't stay awake diagnosis? the answer listed it as delirium why isn't it dementia?

Delirum results from short term, more acute symptoms. Dementia is a longer progressive process.

also change of consciousness (can't stay awake) suggest delirium...

DEMENTIA 1.- History: Chronic, cannot be dated 2.-Onset: Insidious 3.-Duration: Months to years 4.-Course: Chronically progressive 5.-Level of consciousness: NORMAL 6.-Orientation: Disorientation to person 7.-Memory: Recently remotely impaired 8.-Perception: Hallucinations less common 9.- Sleep: Less sleep disruption 10.-Reversibility: Most not Reversible. 11.- Physiologic Changes: Minimal 12.- Attention span: Not reduced
