Hi fellows,

As an IMG, I applied for Int.med but received no interview! I need your feedback.

1. Graduated med school from Iran, 1997.

2. Have some years of post grad practicing as GP.

3. Have one year post grad internship, Germany.

4. Have borderline USMLE passing scores back to 199 and 2001.

5. ECFMG certified.

6. Have research experience and 15 papers in PubMed as a first author.

7. Have recommendation letters from my supervisors in Canada.

But received no interview at all after applying more than 95 programs last year and this year!

Can any body tell me on which part I should focus?!

Thank you.

It is very sad that you haven't gotten a single interview. I'm shocked and surprised, given the fact that you have 15 publications and work experience in Germany and Canada.
Probably your scores, graduation year are the some reasons for it. I hate to say it but would advice you to apply for family medicine. Try your luck in scramble.
Also, you might want to scramble for med/peds combined programs this year. Every year some positions go unfilled and its a good option if you are desperate in becoming an internist.

hi i'm sorry to hear that....but my advice would be apply to fm, psych programs....GOOD LUCK BUDDY, i hope you get it where vere you want..AMEN.

Last year I mainly applied for Family Med.

This year I even only applied to those programs that don't have any cut off USMLE scores or years of graduation!

I also took more than 1 year post grad in Germany and observership and research in Canada with kinda powerful recommendation letters!

I cannot change my grad year and my scores! (Actually don't want to take the exams again, already have ECFMG cerfification.)

What else I can do?!

i think USCE, with hands-on patient management, and LORs from US physicians would help...but dont lose hope yet, go for the post-match and see what happens...goodluck!

Thanks every body who took their time and left me some notes and encouragement. I appreciate you all.

I also had one recommendation letter from an American physician too!

Hopefully something happens! I desperately look for a residency position, in any State, any program, any where!

My feeling is also that USCE counts for a great deal esp. if you are in research/older graduate- one of my interviewers directly told me that because of the number of applicants they try to take fresh graduates with USCE, and this is very easy to screen using the ERAS program- even though this is not put up on the website because if they dont get enough fresh grads, then might call older grads for interviews
If i were you, I would try my best to get some kind of US clinical experience by contacting the US physician who has given you the LoR
Best of luck

I am sorry about your situation. What I feel is all you need is to get a couple of IVs, then your clinical experience in several countries and research experience will definitely secure a spot. As I have heard most of the programs use scores and graduation year as a screening test to select candidates for IVs. So I think the best thing is to build up some contacts who would be able to give you a couple of IVs. Atleast who would be able to give give a phone call to a PD and recommend you. Then they will atleast consider your application. I know it is really hard for us to make contacts, and that is why most of us go to match, but I know a couple of people who secured prematch positions in good hospitals without impressive scores due to contacts.
