Let's take your opinion about this, since your program cordinatoor. What in your opinion are the important factors - other than USMLE grades- that programs consider when looking into applications? what impress you and make the applicants outstanding ?

INTERVIEWING SKILLS!!!! How well you relate in a room full of people. Grades mean nothing when you are in a room of other applicants and residents and you can't communicate with other people. i.e the candidate who did score 99/99 on the exams, but looked bored/disinterested through the whole interview process. Sure, you might be bored, but don't let me see that. i.e. the candidate who did score in the mid 90's, looked great on paper, was text paging during the talk by the program director. She's not on my rank list at all. i.e. the candidate who also scored in the mid 90's, looked great on paper, but couldn't talk with the PD or other applicants because their English was poor. He isn't on the match list (before you jump down my throat - the applicant will not be able to communicate with patients in a proper manner. Would I get a job overseas if I don't speak the language in a fluent manner? No, I wouldn't). i.e. the candidate with high 80s/low 90s, looked decent on paper, aced her interviews, was personable, friendly, acted interested in the program. She isn't the top in terms of scores, but did she pull herself through the interviews. The PD said that they could see her in our program, taking care of patients and really being a star. i.e. the candidate who received their interview due to a "favor" (email or call to the PD from a former resident, staff doctor, etc.). He was borderline on the criteria and with many stronger applicants, we may not have interviewed him. He was wonderful! Chatted with me about travel, food; did his homework about the program, told the program director about how he believed he was going to be able to benefit the program and what his goals were. He's on the match list - really sold himself strong - without being obnoxious about it. Interviewing skills are the key to a successful match.

p.s. It might interest many of you to know that of the AMGs we interviewed, about the same percentage of AMGs vs IMGs are not being ranked. It's not just IMGs that get scrutinized, the AMGs do also. A problem is a problem in any gender, race and religion. DO NOT ASK ME WHAT THE NUMBERS ARE - I won't tell. The percentage is the same.

bbb. What if you have all the qualities and don't get interviews just because you do not have connections.I don't think anybody who needs residency acts the way you have written. What is written on the application is just the good part.Unless you meet a candidate how can you decide that he/she will make a good resident?
