I have a question about preliminary-internal medicine position. actually I want to do 3 years internal medicine residency. but If i get a preliminary position, what's the next step I should do to get PGY-2? is there a official website showing all PGY-2 positions and so I can apply for that? or should I apply through eras again next year for 3 year categorical (that means i do pgy-1 twice)? really appreciate any input.

you cant do whole 3 years of categorical internal medicine after one yar of the prelim, you can join as a 2nd year resident only.

It is not easy to get a prelim position if you are not clear about you categorical. Did i answer your question , if not let me know .

When we interview - unless you specify that you are looking for prelim medicine (to derm or rads, etc), you are interviewing for categorical medicine. Many applicants check both prelim and categorical. For the most part, we ignore that.

U can do 3 year categorical again, i know of people doing dt. U can also apply for pgy2, there is no specific site for dt, sme programs want paper applications if they have opening and sme want application through ERAS. I m not sure though if u can repeat pgy1 if u r on j1, m sure u can do dt on H1

criticaldoc, bbb, and decide, thank you so much for all the help. I have another question, how about if I do get a preliminary position, then is it very difficult to find a PGY-2 internal medicine position next year? Aso, decide, you said I can apply PGY-2 through eras, is that the same application process as we apply for 3 year categorical? I mean in this way how do the program know I want to apply for PGY-2 but not PGY-1? Thanks again.

I wont say it is very difficult to get a pgy2 spot the next year but there is no particular time frame when u would get it. Most places have pgy2 openings around jan, feb and as late as march. Pgy2 positions get vacated when people leave or move from a program, in most case it amgs who move for family reasons etc..

Applying for Pgy2 is not centralized as PGY1. Very few programs have openings for pgy2 and then u can contact them through email or whatever means and ask them their preferred way of accepting application for pgy2.
Hope this helps.
