when i received my step 1 result with a score of 78 when i studied like anything, i thought my world was over...i cried all week & stayed depressed for a very long time but then i gathered all my courage & embarked on studying for step 2 ck & also decided to find some usce as i knew that only my scores aint gonna help me now, i need something extra to stand out of the herd of candidates scoring in 90's & even in 80's(so all u guys who scored in 80's & still think that you are a low scorer, think again!!)...anyways, so i didn't give up & sent out requests to as many hospitals as i could for some research or observerships, i got a million rejects telling me they didn't have any research going on at the moment ( A LIE!!)...it made me even more depressed but still i didn't give up & tried to focus on my step 2 studies then one fine day when i was attending a free event at kaplan( as i could not afford to take their $$$$ classes) i got a call from a physcian assistant asking me if i could come for an interview for research as they saw my request & they needed somebody for that(i guess a free lancer who doesn't want to get paid!!)...so i said ofcourse YES!!! & went there & the DR after talking to me decided to take me for the venture so that's how i began my usce....the 1st 3 months after starting research i didn't get time to study as i had to get up at 5:00am to be there at 8:00a.m as that hospital was quite far from my place & then i wouldn't get done from there until 5:00-6:00pm & then i will have to drive back to my place & get there by 8:00-9:00pm & then be so tired but still try to open my books & fall asleep rigth there....so that's that but then after a couple of months i realised that it's not what i started the research for but research is the means to get to where i wnat to be so anyways, i started step 2 study took it & scored 84 ( well not a top of the line score but atleast better than 76!!)....then i took step 2 cs paassed it.& asked the doctor with whom i was doing research if i could shadow him & another doctor in his clinic for sometime, he agreed as he had been observing me & my hardwork all this long...then i asked these 2 & another doctor at their clinic to write me an lor which they did & by this time the interview season had begun, i applied to 75 programs waited for what seemed liek an eternity & got only 7 interviews but by this time i had become so strong in myself as i knew that it's not gonna be my scores that's going to make the difference but my strong & dedicated personality that will win the hearts of the pd's & the pc's so i read all the books in teh world of how & what to say inthe interview & what not to say & do during interveiws, i literally lived that life even at home, pracstising shaking hands with my family members so as to be confident in how to shake hands with people, how to eat, what not to eat & say to the program....i have to admit that wherever i went for interviews they loved my personality but when it used to come to scores i9 would feel inferior to alot of candidates & yes, sometimes it did show in my interveiw performance but then i would quickluy overcome it & try not to show it but hey, i m a human being & had worries & weak moments....& honestly i did get tired of telling every program that they are the best & my top choice & bla bla bla & keeping my best behaviour at all time, but still i didn't give up i kept saying to myself if God gave me this bad score He must have something in store for me that I can't see right now, so i kept going......so anyways, finally on the mronign of the day when i had decided that i'll submit my ROL after offering my prayers that night i received a call from Th PD of a program that i had interveiwed with & he asked me a couple of questions like what do u think of our program and have you made & submitted your rank order list so i told him that actually, i m planning to do that tonight after offering my prayers so he smiled & said ok i will give you a call in soem time, uh oh, i thought ughhh, there goes my prematch offer maybe, he didn't like my answers that i gave him over the phone, but as by now my habbit had become not to give up but to have faith in God so i kept praying to God that whatever He thinks is best for me, I'll wait for that moement but i just had one request to God that I do get residency somewhere in the US this year as b/c of my scores I knew that if i m left this year then i might not get a chance any year!!!....but I guess God was listeening to me b/c the PD called after an hour & her said that I believe there is someone up there watching over you as you have not submitted your ROL & our review comittee has been reviewing your application since morning, we really liek your dedication & hardwork & we believe that we need people like you to join our team....i still didn't get that so i said forgive me for not understanding but what exactly are you saying so he said that we would like to offer you a prematch!!!!!.....i was like yes!!!!! & then the next day I got my prematch offer & now I got my dream....I M AN MD FOR REAL NOW!!!!

I just wanted to write all this for all the people who think that they have low scores....no dear, the score only boosts or snatches away your confidence but if you stay strong & confident you can make it happen!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL & MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!

thanks guys, it really mean alot to me.

I can only speak for myself, the interview books that i found good were, iserson getting into residency & 1st aid for match, i did word by word as they guided in it.

which hospital, places r best shot to apply for residency...u can research about the program criteria, i bought the matcharesident.com package & it helped me find out about program criteria as lots of program cut off score was 80 & in some 90, time since gaduation was 2-3 yeras while i was 4 yr post grad, many needed externship in usce which i didn't have....please don't apply to teh porgrams who have criteria 80-85 & one of your steps score is below that as you will be only wasting your money.

about research/observership.....go on different hosp websites & go in research & contact teh people via email & phone telling them about your interest & even by sending them you impressive resumewink

hope this helps!!
GOD BLESS.
