under both conditions, blood flows back to the atrium, they are kind of similiar, aren't they?

i think you mean prolapse, not relapse. most common cause of mitral regurge is MV prolapse. there's retrograde blood flow into left atrium during systole. in MR there will be pansystolic murmur radiating to axilla. and in MV prolapse (bulging of ant. and post. leaflets into atrium during systole) there will be mid-systolic click and mid to late systolic regurgitant murmur following the click. hope this helps. if you have goljan rapid review, check it out: p. 185
