Hi friends

I have done a lot or research about observship/externship and I came up with the conclusion that these are of little help.

I think the best way is to apply for preliminary year residency; these positions are usually underfilled and easy to get and they will give you a real USCE. of course these positions are paid as any other resident in categoral positions but they are only for one year and you will have to apply for the match again with no guarantees.

I work as general surgery specialist in Qatar; they have a lot of USA consultants here, one of them Dr Kimball is a famous trauma surgeon and was director of several residency programs in USA; this was his advice.

Hi muther. As far as I know even prelimnary positions are as difficult to get into as residency.

Well nothing is easy but preliminary year is the easiest, this was also Dr Kimball saying; actually he gave me this scenario: go for preliminary year and move your butts ( in his exact words) to impress your superior, perhaps you get lucky next year and one of the resident in the leave the program and there will be a room for you.

Sincerely

if you are going into surgery, it could be a way to go....don't forget, prelim surgery year is by far one of the most brutal years thoughout all specialties, so you have to be extremly determined to got into that "sweatshop" ... and to do it just for mear USCE? think twice....

on the other hand, if you ARE planning to become a surgeon (or anesthesiologist), that could be the only way to get in

thank you babydoc4usmle

I am planning for general surgery so probably this is the best for me. I will apply for categoral surgery first and leave last 5 choices for preliminary year.

I wish there is somebody like Dr Kimball in other branches in my work place to ask him.

are observship/externships enough for other branches?

Sincerely
