I graduated in 96 and worked in molecular biology for 4 years, then focused my research on clinical trials, including academic based and now pharmaceutical studies, e.g. oncology, rheumatology, CNS and cardiology drug development programs. I enjoyed it but still would like to go back to the residency program. I am not sure if this experience will have any benefit at all toward my application. My scores are step 1 92, step 2 81 (I took step 2 first and had a very limited amount of time to prepare). I wish to be accepted by a university based IM program but now sure if that is doable based on my background. I am thinking to take step 3 to strengthen my application, will that help? Would you mind advice on what I should emphasize? any other suggestions? Very appreciate your comments. :P Visa status? As unfair as it is, it's something that program directors look at. When was your last clinical experience? The PD's that I have spoken with look at completion of step 3 prior to residency something that candidates do because they want the H-1B visa - not really to strengthen an application. Again, it's going to depend on what university? Nebraska or Johns Hopkins, etc. Good luck

Dear BBB, Thanks for your reply. I am a PR (green card holder). No visa problem. Thanks god  If my clinical trial experience ( I am reviewing patient's chart almost everyday now) does not count, my clinical experience will be back to 96. Of course I wish to be joining hopkins  , but I am realistic enough to look for a not-so-competitive ( to my opinion, yours may be different, I am not to offend these programs), let us say somewhere in midwest, e.g. ohio state? Is that something you think doable? Thanks again.
