Hepatic Encephalopathy. Is neomycin still used as part of the treatment for Hepatic Encephalopathy? -One UW question (updated 2006) says it is no longer used due to issues with efficacy and toxicity. -Another UW question (updated 2008) says it IS used. Any thoughts or ideas on this???

Antibiotics (neomycin, metronidazole, rifaximine) are 2nd line treatments, as well as zinc, ornithine aspartate, Na+ benzoate, TIPSS, etc There are other options under investigation (L-carnitine, NMDA receptor antagonists etc), as well as blood purifying systems (MARS)... The whole matter is sooo complex, I don't feel comfortable answering you question... Sorry!
