Hepatic Encephalopathy.

Is neomycin still used as part of the treatment for Hepatic Encephalopathy?
-One UW question (updated 2006) says it is no longer used due to issues with efficacy and toxicity.
-Another UW question (updated 2008) says it IS used.

Any thoughts or ideas on this???

Anyone? Besides Lactulose, any other thoughts on treatment of Hepatic Encephalopathy?

Antibiotics (neomycin, metronidazole, rifaximine) are 2nd line treatments, as well as zinc, ornithine aspartate, Na+ benzoate, TIPSS, etc
There are other options under investigation (L-carnitine, NMDA receptor antagonists etc), as well as blood purifying systems (MARS)...
The whole matter is sooo complex, I don't feel comfortable answering you question... Sorry!

Low protein diet, neomycin, lactulose, prevention of GI bleeding
