Research: It is very difficult to be so productive in one year in research. For basic science research, you will need a big lab, lots of people in, and people willing to teach and 'share' data. If it is just you and one tech or, even worse, you and your PI - forget it. Clinical research where you are paid is quite rare - but more likely that you can get published -even an abstract and present at a conference for instance. Also would be possible to get a retrospective case notes based paper written and submitted possibly accepted. Prelim year: choose wisely. Some places make you work like a dog, feeling like you will be picked at the end - but won't give you anything but encourage you to apply. Also there is the problem with the timing - i.e. start prelim in July, and need to letter by September. At some programs, esp if you are willing to do a year and then apply, they will keep you on. You are more likely to make useful clinical contacts with prelim position rather than basic lab research unless the PI happens to be a program director. Hope this helps. BD
