Iron deficiency anemia, Beta thalassemia, and anemia of chronic disease.....How do you differentiate the three based on lab studies?

Fe deff - microcyt, hypochrom, no inclusions, TIBC up, Ferritin down.
Beta thal, - hupochrom, microcytic, target cells, HbF up, anisopoikilocytosis.
Chronic dis- normocytic, normochromic, platelets down to about 40 000, TIBC down.

Hope this helps.

Why does the the TIBC go down in Chronic dis? Chronic dis can also be hypochromic microcytic. Explain.

Chronic...cuz the problem iz loading Fe to cells, so Fe accumulates, hence binding capasity goes down, more Fe is loaded to carrying protein binding sites.
Any anemia can presen in any way, we are talking here classical book findings. If Fe is not loaded, those cells that are released from BM will be hypochromic and microcytic.
