Hello everybody, I am new to this forum and would like to introduce myself. I graduated in 2004 in South India and stayed in UK for 2 years and came back to India after the visa crisis. I have joined DNB ortho and also planning to prepare for USMLE. 1.Can anyone please give me an idea about the prospects in US for fellowship programs in ortho. 2. Does the ECFMG certification process or the state medical board licensure procedure require a good standing certificate from the countries I have worked before? ( I am having trouble getting a good standing certificate from UK GMC, as I was holding limited registration and it has been phased out and none of my details exist with them now) Any input will be highly appreciated. Regards.

hi smartboy n dr.dolittle2, i have no answers to you questions.....probably seniors could guide you....i would suggest you to post these queries in usmletomd.com forum...you'll get a prompt reply... i had a bad day today....i had sent anapplication for electives at weill cornell in march last week....i had emailed them asking about my application status...they dint reply till date. today i got my application envelope returned back from the US postal services becoz they could find the address with the "attempted ,not known" seal on it.....i wrote the exact address whic they mentioned on the application form.....pin code was 10065....i checked the web-site thinking may be the address might have changed.....i was surprised to find out the address was the same but pin code was 10021......it wasnt my fault...coz the application form still had 10065 on it...so two pin codes for the same area i called the electives coordinator up.......she apologised......but she said she was helpless....and now i have less chances of getting the elective coz i m late.......there are 75 students above me......she asked me to send the application form again in a courier now.......at the same address (pin code- 10065)......i asked for her mail ID.....she dint give it.....she'd give it after she recieves my application (she thinks may be i'll bug her with spams ha?) moral of the story-1.US postal service is poor 2.bug people on the phone, not on the mail if u want ur things to get through.

hey lakshya, sorry to hear bout ur problem...u still have a chance I am sure...call them up regularly and try to make sure to follow the progress...all the best drdolittle--ECFMG requires ur med school (MBBS) degree to be proper and standing presently...thats all...state licensing require u to provide info on MMBS and any lisence u help previously in "US"...( at leat that what Massachusetts board asks for) ...i am registered in India as a pediatrician but no documentation was asked for those...now if u apply for fellowship directly i dont know if the requirements would change or not.....ortho fellowships i really have no idea..... smartboy--i think i have mentioned this before but couldnt locate where so here goes it again....u need to have documentation that u have received all the childhood vaccinations but many of us dont have it...so u can get boosters (dT, hepB, MMR if u hadnt recieved it) and keep these documented....there maybe some instis that will give u there own forms to be filled by the physician giving u the vaccines like miami Ultimately what most ppl end up doing is getting a titre level cheked for MMR, DPT, HepB, Varicella (u could document if u have any sequale like skin scars)...this chek can be done by using Indian labs but best to let the program where u are doing residency do it in there own lab.... well sorry for the late reply....hope it helps...cheer up lakshya, u get there

so finally my packet reached weill cornell..even DHL had a tough time tracing them....they asked me for "more info" 2-3 times...i sent them 3 tel no. and a fax number.....finally it reached after 6 days! the electives coordinator says i m quite late......i got 90 students above me....so how do i convince her? my applic reached just before the deadline (3 months from the start of electives which is 5 may for me)..

hey all imgs from india im knid of new to this thread.......i am mostly a silent reader of this forum and thought this thread might help me... well presently im in india, done only with step 1...... i have a post graduate degree in pediatrics from india...and quite a bit of pediatric experience..... my queries are as such......can anyone please tell me how it is possible to get obsrverships or externships in the usa,,,how imp are us lors?? is it possible that when i go to give my cs , which ill probably be doing in august/sept. i can do observership at some place.....if i manage to get one that is by hook or by crook.... is it possible to do fellowships before a reszidency program esp. if you already have experience in the speciality??? how helpful are contacts in the usa? likke if u have seniors etc working at some places.... my main query is regarding usce ...how one can go about trying to get it??? if theres anyone out there who can help me ill be more than grateful,,, anything for a reasonable answer.... i only hope aome large hearted indian out there will be generous to answer my queries ... good luck to all indian imgs...may they rule the world!!!!!

http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/71010/ ok I am going to be ur large hearted generous Indian ...mostly because, dear milestogo, i have answered these question b4, in fact in this very thread on the first page and because i cant help but reply to fellow pediatricians . So here goes, again, my take on your questions! For USCE--i think contacts are very important for getting observerships, not seniors though, more like ppl on faculty positions...yes most ppl club together CS /Step 3 travel to US with an observership...US LORs are also important because they and USCE go together, u do a observership and only then u get the LOR and the LOR kind of proves u did a quality OBservership... it is possible to do fellowship before residency but u have to take all the steps of USMLE anyways and u will be at a disadvantage when competing with pl who have done residency from US...try usmletoMD siet for fellowship info before residency.. getting a USCE is difficult...there are no standard ways of applying...u have to start by searching websites and writing to anyone and everyone u know...besides writing to ppl u dont know... all the best...
