i am not sure about acute cases,but in chronic cases,weight loss,decreased sleep,diurnal variations in symptoms,lack of appetite etc may be the commoner features to distinguish depression from sadness.

depression is diagnosed when these symtoms r present fr 2 wks or more.
sadness is a state of mind where these symptoms may or may not be there but r transient.
