segmentation

 during fasting its MMC

Isn't the answer B?Segemental contraction does not cause any movement of food in the GIT and is only helpful in mixing....whereas peristalsis is for movement of food from the oral end to the aboral end......what is MMC and BER???

nope, segmentation gets it going, peristalsis only moves 1-3 cm at a time, segmentation rate differences b/w portions of intestines is responsible foir major movement of chyme.

MMC ... major motor complex, occurs b/w meals 3-4 times a day, moves undigested stuff along.
BER ... Basal electrical rythm... cels of Cajal are the responsible party.

OK so segemental contraction causes movement of food through the intestines due to the difference of segemntation rate in the different portion whereas peristalsis causes movement of food but not in a big way.BER by cajal cells.....which if stimulated till threshhold leads to action potential and hence a persitalsis wave and MMC is only applicable when no food has been ingested.

However in BRS physiology(pg.224)its mentioned that segmentation contraction 'causes mixing without net forward movement of the chyme. And for peristalsis 'highly coordinated and propel the chyme through the small intestine towards the large intestine'
I still feel its peristalsis.
