Hello akm. You are a young fellow. have good scores and are a citizen. I wouldn't lose sleep over the actual date you apply. Just focus on taking your CK and get great scores... you will get interviews don't worry.

  #102

Bailey.
I think you have strong points. First and foremost you are a citizen, you already took step2 and did good on it. you don't want a very competitive specialty. So I will not say that it is crazy if you apply this year. On the other hand, you might want to wait until you get your step one score to put full power in your application.
What I mean to say is that you probably want to get everything ready, and uploaded, but only pay for the programs once you get your step 1 score.

Hey guys,
I'm annother applicant hoping to being matched in 2009. Here are my credentials

Step 1 99
Step 2 94
CS Pass
ECFMG Certified.

Currently a Research coordinator in home country for a multicentre phase 111 clinical trial.
Plan to take my Step 3 in October.
No USCE or US LOR but i have some experience in the UK as an elective student.

What can I do to improve my chances? Any tips will be welcome.
Best of Luck everyone and lets keep helping each other out!!!
I am applying in int medicine!

  #107

Forgot to add that i'm a 2005 grad and am going to be applying in int medicine!

  #108

Dr. Nickle.... your best chance is to actually be living in the US by the time you apply. If you can plan for that Best of luck

  #109

Anamgarcia thank you for taking the time to reply. Why is being in the US by the time I apply so important? I have an observership lined up for november in florida, plus i plan to be in the US by october to give my step 3. I have 3 home LOR's by MD's who did thier residency and fellowship from the US, as well as 1 British LOR from a consultant in a good teaching hospital there. By what time would you recommend I reach the US? Once again thank you for your time.

My goal this yr is Match 09.
credentials:
1) 99/245; 97/235, CS in June.
2) 4 months USCE (hopefully by the end of August) LORs, not very strong.
3) 2008 grad
4) No research, no publications
5) Need visa, looking for H1B
6) Won't be ECFMG certfied till mid Feb probably. My school won't issue my degree till the end of December or Jan.

Planning to apply to OBGYN , all my electives are in OBGYN.

My back ups are IM and FP, but I'm not so excited about them.

I know I will be very busy during July August, so I need to get started into the application process as soon as possible, but I don't really know where to start from!

I mean, what r all the things I should have done before the 1st week of Sept? Does anyone have a tick list of sth similar that can help?

but now seeing 2008 match results.......i am highly worried and depressed........do i stand a chance anywhere in 2009???
seniors or experienced candidates, plz guide,

  #113

i think there is r no rules in determing who will get match or not ..
the main issue is where do u wanna be matched ..
many of my friends with double 99 last year ended up out of the match ..in the same time i know many with 80+ got match ..
the difference is very simple ,
those who got double 99 ..r bigheaded so they think themself as the only candidates with such grades ...
so they applied to very high ranked university programs and they failed to get spot ..
the last point to be made here is , research is very critical part in the CV especially in US hospitals ..
so never lose hope ...
God with us in this Match..

Dr Nickle..

It actually helps because the programs can contact you easier, and there is a feeling that being here, you will most likely be able to start work without any visa problem. Also, it is easier for you to follow up in person, which is better appreciated. Any USCE you can get, will help you more. if you can afford being here around the time of IVs, say move to the US in early october, that should help you.

  #116

Guys... lets not get stuck in the performance anxiety, we all have strong and weak points. I suggest we should follow our hearts and give the best of ourselves to fulfill the dream of practice medicine in this country. But worse comes to worse, if we do not match, we have to keep in mind that there is more to life than matching.

Lets go to the field with our heads up, our arms open and prey that we get what is best for us.
GL to all

Thanks, paheli, for your great message. There are only 2 to 3 spots for IMG each year in dermatology. Even though I have strong faith in God, I still doubt about the possibility. But really appreciate your encouragement. I will work hard for my part, and leave the rest to God. I would say it will be a miracle and I will trust Him with all my heart, my mind and strength after that. (conditional love, ah? Anyway, He knows us human being.)

My choices are: 1. Dermatology (with 99.99% of impossibility) 2. Family Practice 3. Pathology 4. Internal Medicine. Let's see which path God will guide me to.

Good luck dear. You deserve the best. And you will do great no matter what specialty you end up working in.

Uba08.

OB IS very competitive, but you have great scores and some USCE. Try to get outstanding letters if you can, but I will definitely have a backup. I applied to OB last year, was very stubborn not applying to anything else, and went unmatched. Don't repeat my mistakes. I know how you feel that you oNLY want to be an OB, but play smart and go for other specialty too. so in case you are not matched to OB, you will surely match in other specialty.
Having said that though, I am praying that you get your dream OB spot. try a lot of community programs and if they offer you a prematch. GRAB IT.... with your profile it is tempting to think that you have a chance in university programs, and the truth is that at this point in time, Americans, want OB, so do not waste your money, and go for community...

  #125

update
I still have not taken step2 ck or csa
soon very soon and lets hope it has passing grades.
