There's no magic formula. No credentials guarantee neither success, nor failure. But competition is getting tougher, for sure.

Hello
I am a foreign medical student from New Delhi, India.
I will take my step2 CS in apr end and hopefully will take step 1 by Jul end and step 2ck by october.
I am not sure if I should go ahead and apply for 2009 match or should I wait an year.
I am currently doing elective rotations for two months at a university which has a good Internal Medicine program and is IMG friendly. I am pretty confident that i will get atleast 3 good LORs from here which should increase my chances for a residency spot atleast at this program.
But I am not sure if applying without step2 ck is a good idea.
Any inputs are appreciated. Thank you.
PS: I am interested in getting an H1b Visa

If you do steps in hurry, results may be not good and you may endanger your career.

Dear all, I have a question regarding 2008 match.
Many people were matched to IM according to "please share match experience thread "
Why I can't find people matched to FM of choice?
I m new in this match world so my question may sound wierd.
grin

Okay, so I was wondering......if you have questions about a particular program, is it better to email the program coordinator or the program director.

Is it too soon to start inquiring from programs about requirements for the 2009 match?

I got Ivs from very competitive uni. programs and my whole package is not very good. Old grad, gaps in cv, late application, need visa, no proper usce.... what else?
My message is that its the whole package it counts.

Have been hesitating to write anything on this thread. Finally decided to collect my courage to.

Graduated in 1995 in a seven year program, but would be counted as 1993 graduate. Actually the same. A very old graduate.

Step 1:238/99. Step 2:244/99. CS is pending. Not taking step 3 yet. Have over 10 publications, several book chapter writing. Four years of research experience in the states. 1 observership now in a private clinic. Will find more opportunities in the coming months.

I will pursue an impossible: dermatology. I know everyone will say it is impossible for me. An very old graduate, not a stellar score (Most American Medical students who pursue dermatology have scores over 250, with AOA membership, tons of awards et al). But I had been a dermatologist for over 5 years in my home country. I had loved dermatology since I was a medical student.

I know it is impossible in a worldly view. But I believe everything is possible for God. If this is God's purpose for me-to serve Him in a right position, it will become true.

On the other hand, I will put IM as my second choice.

njcjzy, what's happening? You can't be thinking like that!disapproval

NOTHING is impossible!! NEVER say that! I wish you the best, and hope to see you succeed! nod

Thanks, paheli, for your great message. There are only 2 to 3 spots for IMG each year in dermatology. Even though I have strong faith in God, I still doubt about the possibility. But really appreciate your encouragement. I will work hard for my part, and leave the rest to God. I would say it will be a miracle and I will trust Him with all my heart, my mind and strength after that. (conditional love, ah? Anyway, He knows us human being.)

My choices are: 1. Dermatology (with 99.99% of impossibility) 2. Family Practice 3. Pathology 4. Internal Medicine. Let's see which path God will guide me to.

Hi all,
I am a 2004 graduate from India.
Step 1: 82
Step 2 CK: taking in June
Step 2CS: waiting for scheduling perrmit, could get a date in Oct/ Sep last week.
Need visa,
Have 1 LOR, planning to get one by August.
I want to apply for pediatrics, what r my chances with such a low score?
Do u think I should go for 2009 match or should I wait for the next one?
Please advice me, it would be a great help,
Thanks in advance

  #73

count me in too

2003 graduate with step 1 n ck scores in 80s CS in may ......want to apply for peds

anyone wants to give any opinion for the chances .that will be great .........

  #74

Like bbb mentioned (not the exact quote though), no one can predict your chance into certain specialty, only you can. If you feel you are weak in your scores, strengthen yourself in other areas such as USCE, strong recommendation letters, connections et al. Best of luck!

Thanks njcjzy
