In which of the following tissues is glucose the major fuel in prolonged fasting?
1-kidney
2-liver
3-red blood cells
4-brain
5-muscles

  #2

RBC

  #3

yes

  #4

what fuel does brain uses in prolonged fasting??

  #5

RBC's and exercizing skeletal muscles use anaerobic glycolysis...

in states of prolonged fasting brain can use ketone bodies .

  #6

no itsonly the RBCs which uses glucose anaerobically for all their energy needs,under all conditions because they dont have mitochondria.
brain derive energy from oxidising glucose to CO2 & water in well fed state &in prolonged fasting 2/3 energy comes from ketones & rest from glucose.
what is the preferred fuel for cardiac myocytes in well fed & fasting state??

  #7

yep 2/3 of fuel comes from ketone bodies and rest from glucose for brain.

:idea: for cardiac muscle : behaves like skeletal muscle in terms of fuel use.
well fed -->glucose and FA
after brief period of fasting--->FA
after prolonged fast--->ketone bodies .

i am sorry Asmi ,but u are partially correct...
cardiac muscles behaves like SKELETAL MUSCLES WHICH ARE IN EXTENDED PERIOD OF EXERCISE,so its beta oxidation of FAs.
& in prolonged fasting ketones are also used.
ONLY DURIN FETAL LIFE THEY USE GLUCOSE AS AN ENERGY SOURCE.

Do you mean that cardiac muscle don't use glucose at all in adult life..?
