Hyperventilation to a low pCO2 can lower intracranial pressure quickly. Could anyone tell me the mechanism? Thanks for any insight.

i dont know the precise mech, but i know when there is too much hypervent, the brain autoreg and there is vasospasm of the vessels and even worsening of the condition

Hi everybody!! I read that in normal conditions the intracraneal pressure (ICP) regulates itself by dilating or contracting the brain vessels respecting with the PaCO2 levels. When the PaCO2 levels diminish the brain vessels contract and viceversa. So hyperventilation is based on this principle, but most agree to keep the PaCO2 level above 20mmHg (others say 25 - 30mmHg), 'cause this is the critical level in which can appear a brain ischemia.
