Can you re-apply and change your speciality after 1st year of residency. Lets say I obtain a position in a FP residency, can I re-apply for the following years match and then change specialities to say IM? Are there any practical problems in doing so?

not impossible, I have seen people do it successfully.

potential problems:

you have to start applying again this summer(only 3-4 months into your residency)

you will need a letter from your current pd to support your application

scheduling your iv's in way where you can get time off from your current program (call schedule, vacation time, etc...)

a personal statement explaining the change of mind

are there any visa issues?

lets say I manage to scramble into a surgical preliminary, would I have a reasonably good chance for a IM residency the following year? Or if i really wanna do IM and dont mind waiting a year is it better for me to not scramble at all and just re-apply for next years match.

I am hoping for a J1 visa. No GC

I wish I knew the right answerfor you....But the decision is up to you. Prelim surgery is really hard, but it will give you usce. Getting time off from the program to attend IVs might be a problem. Staying unmatched though can also potentially hurt you: what are you going to do in that time? PDs will be interested to know how you filled the time in a useful way... So the big question is: how can you improve your application in either one of the options? right down what would be the advantages and disadvantages of both options and decide.

Good luck to you!
