Here are my personal reasons: 1. It is interesting. I like psychiatry. Its very interesting to understand how the mind works and how we react to every day events. It helps you understand yourself and improve your own quality of life. There is tons of research going on that makes clear that psych and neuro go hand in hand, and that makes it even more itneresting. 2. Quality of life. The psych residency is supposed to be a little less horrible than other specialties. Once you are out, the quality of life is excellent. Sure, you won't make as much as a brain surgeon, but you will make plenty and you won't have to work 24 x 7. A psychiatrist can aspire to have a life outside of medicine. 3. Its feasible. As an IMG, psychiatry is one of the specialties you can get into without having to give someone a kidney. There are many inner city programs, and people without 99/99 can qualify. 4. There are lots of opportunities for fellowships in interesting things like child, forensics, consult liason, etc. There is a shortage of child psychiatrists all over the country, so there are always jobs available where the hours rock and the salary is excellent. 5. Variety. As a psychiatrist, you can look for jobs that match your personality. If you like the hussle and bussle of the ER but don't like to manage patients long term, you can just work the ER. If you like really crazy people, you can work in in-patient jobs. If you like the well-crazies, you can do private practice. If you like your crazies on the rocks, you can do substance abuse. If you don't like crazy people very much at all, but you like sick people that act crazy, you can do consult liason work. And so on and so forth - there's a kind of crazy for every taste.

Hi Puchpal - I've been here, but got a little superstitious and afraid of "jinxing" myself. I prematched and am afraid to say anything that might make the gods think I'm bragging. There is still a chance that my stupid university will not produce my diploma on time and that I will be totally screwed. How about you?
