you dont have to stay ofr the 2 years in your home country if you will return on ecfmg sponsored J visa. but you cant change your visa from inside USA you must go to either Canada, mexico or ur home country to have a new visa stamp from the US embassy there.

actually, i called ECFMG about this because i am also on J1 research. they will make the application on your behalf. they can even start the process before match day ie before youeven match at a program. . however, i did not ask if i would need to leave the country and then re-enter.
call ECFMG and they can clarify the postion.

but do U think total no of yrs will change..
I mean if I spent one to two yrs on j1 research, does this will count from 7 yrs of ECFMG j1 or it will be totally new visa ,,,
sorry,,, what about change to h1? if U know any thing please share with the me and readers

You can change j-1 research to J-1 clinical without leaving US. You do not need a new stamp to stay in US. Change from J-1 research to J-1 clinical is a lengthy process. ECFMG processes it same as regular J-1 clinical but ECFMG has to receive approval from Dept. of State for change in J-1 category. This approval may take at least 2-3 months... in my case it took more than 9 months....You will get full 7 years max under J-1 clinical. Change to H-1 from J-1 research is easier. You will need J-1 waiver (if it applies) processed before applying for change.

Hi plastic_surgery please guide me
I am from India & came here in a medical sub-speciality on J1 research visa in 2007 & for 2008 I have valid DS-2019 (need visa stamping on passport)
Q 1) I am offered a clinical post from January 2009. Is is possible to convert J1 research to J1 clinical? as my hopital persons dont know about this. If yes please tell me how to proceed.
Q 2) Whether I should request them to sponser H1 instead of J1 because J1 they routinly offer & not H1.
Q 3) My J1 research is University sponsored & not ECFMG but since J1 clinical will be ECFMG sponsored, so is it possible to change J1 catogory in this case also & it will take how much time?
Q 4) whether I can apply for NORI to wave from 2HRR.

1. you can convert from J-1 research to J-1 clinical.. you do not need J-1 waiver for your research J1 for this change. Once your institution/hospital applies to ECFMG for a new J1, ECFMG will request more information for processing the Dept of State application for this status change... As I mentioned in previous post it may take anywhere between 3-9 months.. So you should start early (right now).
2. H-1 will be better any day if the institution is ready to sponsor one.. For that you will need J-1 waiver (if it applies to your position,, I am pretty sure your current J-1 research position is subject to 2 yr HRR)
3. most of the research j1 are processed directly bu Dept of state... yes, you can change that j1 to ECFMG sponsored J1 clinical visa.
4. You can apply for NORI for waiver.. that will also take between 6-12 months.. Till final waiver is processed by Dept of State, you can change to H1..

Hi all you guys in J1 research visa can some one please help me understand the process.The Hospital I am doing an observership is happy to sponsor this visa for me but have no clue how.
I have figured that I would need a DS 2019
Q will ECFMG or the hospital have to generate this visa for me?
Q Do I need the letter from health ministry and if so what are the required document? How long does it take? and who do I have to conatct?
Q Can I do this from the US itself? Do I have to go back to home country mine being India does any one know the processing time?
Thanks. I hope to get some anwers. I have been trying so many website but to no avail.

so Research J1 can be converted to H1 without a hassle?? and it does not decrease or interfere with ur chances of getting an H1?? so if one gets a research position on a J1...it shud be readily accepted?? coz i have heard of people refusing research positions as they have been offered them on J1.
