I'm an IMG with scores 97/91/pass who had applied in surgery in this match. I had 3 interviews. I received my step 3 score report today and learnt that I had failed with scores 183/74. I'm shocked and my confidence has taken a severe beating. I dont know what to do now except feeling miserable. My score had been automatically transmitted. Should I inform the programs personally about the failure though I had checked my desire for a J1 visa only in my application? My interviews went ok. where do I stand now?? Do I have any chance of matching this year? How adversely will this failure affect my prospects, especially at this time of the match season?

As long as you are opting for a J1 I don't think it will affact your chances that much. Hope you will get through.....

Dear Aiminhigh

Trust me I know the pain, I have been through this storm,,,my step 1 & 2 scores are 90+

So failing step 3 was a big blow to my confidence. But I have restarted and I am taking my exam on march 1st week. get over it and yes obviously you can do it, it was just 1 point misssed!!!! Best time is to take the exam again asap because once you begin your residency it will be very haaard. And you are almost there, buck up give it a try and get over it!

its difficult and extremely bad time, i know but GOD GIVES FAILURE TO THOSE WHO CAN HANDLE IT! i'm sure you can handle it my friend!

thanx, abinet and redddd. Redddd, I hope and pray that we have really bright days ahead in this match. Good luck, buddy!!

  #6

also, I have another query......does applying for a score recheck help in any way since I've failed by 1 point?? or is it another way by which they make money at our expense.....

  #7

you can have it re checked if it really relieves your anxiety , but I have never heard , that any body's score changed. But I suggest you do it if it makes you feel better.

i just took step three and had a horrible experience..i guess it was anxiety but i answered so many very easy and straight forward questions wrong and messed up really badly on a ccs case...i had a pt with new onset diabetes and ended up admitting him to the icu w/dka cuz i was in panic mode. needless to say im certain i failed and have been really depressed ever since. did the people who failed have similar experiences or did they feel good after the test? how bad is messing up one case (the other cases were sorta ok but the MC screwed me up).pleaseeee reply im really sad

i felt I will pass after the exam... sadly I didnt, step 3 is very unpredictable so wait and watch, u never know u may pass. goood luck

As soon as I came out of the exam center, I really felt that I failed!sad Even though I studied more than 6 months, practiced more than 200 sample tests and got six months break to study! May be I am stupid! But a lot of things like distractions by our examiners, cold temperature of the exam room, Hotel also affected me! Prometric also didn't let me a one day break between the two days during scheduling! I came from Canada and costed me more than 3000$ and a big failure! Also haven't received even one interview! The funniest thing is that I have 17 papers as a first author in PubMed too!

The unluckiest people are those at borderline 183/74.What a tragedy.

@ dr9576

You should report to the prometric authorities about the kind of treatment meted out by the concerned prometric centers so that in future, no one would suffer the way you did.

@ aiminghigh

i agree wih reddddd, that you should try to tackle step 3 soon as it might get hard while in residency to deal with it as the PGY-1 year is usually the tough part, especially the surgery PGY-1. Also talk to the PDs where you appeared for the Interviews regarding the deadline by which they need the step 3 result.

All the best !

Hi , I am new to this forum but have been reading your notes for some time now ... I retook step 3 recently( failed by margin the first time ).. was completely devastated but somehow gathered all the strength to review materials again (did premier review this time) .. and gave this exam 2 weeks ago, now freaking out for the results again cauz this is one unpredictable exam and you really cant tell.. can someone tell me how much percentage of the real exam you need to do correct in order to be sure of passing .. is the ccs and mcq s counted together or separatelly ? i am really freaking out as this is very important for me to pass this time to continue my residency..
Miserable, if you read this ,can you pls tell me how much % of the test you were sure you did right ?
