Hii!!Janaki!! Sorry to hear Nikhil is sick. i hope he feels better soon. with kids we can never predict how our day is gonna be.and when they r sick the poor little things need their my moms even more. when my son is sick he just does'nt get off my lap and my daughter needs me to cuddle up next to her on the sofa and watch TV. well what ever makes them feel better, so i can imagine how it must be for u with an 18 mnth old. anyway in the 2 hrs that u have maybe u could do some q's. 1/2 hr for 25 q's and 1 hr to review them or eve take up FA and mug up the important facts of what u have done so far then those 2 hrs will be really HY.and when Nikhil is feeling better u can go back to u r regular schedule. ihope he feels better soon.

hi journal my husband was sick today so had to do all the work related to nikhil and then made some soup for husband ,put him to sleep ,and came to library to study .i think i did the right thing comi9ng to library coz staying at home makes me do some house work or an other and not study . still didnt come up with a date for exam i think i wont for a while .i want to get the home front straight meaning : what to do when nikhil is sick :nanny /husband at home so i dont get too tired and study atleast 2 hours what to do when husband is sick repare some food and go to library and ask him to call on your cell and still study atleast 2 hours that day a set wake up time ,a set sleep time {good 8 hours of sleep } take vitamins ,eat good nutritious food ,exercise well so i will have more energy throughout the day not too much arguing with husband ,talking to parents and inlaws in scheduled times so emotionally i can stay sound . these things i want to practise over months along with studing for few hours a day and then start real usmle . coz i realised i can survive without usmle but if one of the above things get messed up my son and my husband will get affaected and that troubles me more than not sdtudying for usmle

i am sick today and when i am not functioning properly physically as well as mentally i dont think this is the time to make important decisions or even evaluate my studying .let me just get through this family sickness and mine in a calm way and then when i am completely recovered i can charge myself up . perservance........ perservance .......... do not criticize yourself when u are not in your best of conditions ...... take it easy .treat urself as if u would treat a patient then u can recover faster and study again ......

Yes janaki, you are right, we should keep our mind stable emotionally, ..otherwise it wont let us do anything and go anywhere ! take your time to address each of the above issue, and make your plans and decisions comforatbly !

HII!!Janaki, u really sound paniced and frustrated. Ok let me start out by saying that i am not giving advice, what ever i write here is out of my experience as a mom and student. See once we have children they become our priority inn life exclusive of all else.that is our culture, and i understand u r fear of letting the years go by b'coz that is exactly what i have done. i grad in 2000. came here in 2000. had my first kid in 2001. and then exited all thoughts of USMLE b'coz i was so wrapped up in my world never had the time to sit down and study. its not that i had'nt tried but like u i felt u had to sit consistently everyday for a min of 7-8 hrs and then finish the exam in6-8 months atleast thats what everyone does.so i htought that when my daughter goes to school i will study then my son happened. and whoosh usmle out the window. now my son is 2yrs old. and the realities of life have caught up with me i realized with 2 kids my world is NOT going to be perfect for studying or anything.IT IS ONLY GOING TO BE AS PERFECT AS I MAKE IT.which means basically not and u take what ever u can and make the most of it. I have been officially studying from OCT at that point i had only 4 hrs /dayand i was touching my books after 7 years not counting the innumerable times i've started reading and gave up after 2-3 days. it was awful. it was so slow i wondeed if i ever had been a doctor, how could i forget all this stuff i've given exams in this stuff and passed and i still could'nt remember or read fast. then in Jan i started reading with study partners and then that made a lot of difference for me.i never could do that before back when i was in college.that was when my studied started picking up momentum b'coz now my time was set and those 4 hrs were dedicated to other people no excuses and then once i started learning stuff i added some night hours from my sleep to my study schedule. so now i'm at 6-7 hrs / day which is not great compared to all those who put in 10-14hrs/day. but i'm a mom with 2 kids and a family to run. it might take others 6-8 months its gonna take me a year so what. I want a residency even if it takes me 2 years. what ever i read i read it well but of course u forget so what when i'm in q's stage i will review with q's and i'm bound to recall then. 7 yrs ago my aim was95-99 now my aim is anywhere above85. i've had to scale down and i'm not ashamed of it. its just that i don't have much of a choice and my SIGHTS are set on the GOAL not the MEANS. everyday i leave my son with my sis in law from 10-3 from 10-2 i study with my friends, 2 i go to pick my daughter from school , i go little early and sit and do a min of 5 q's from q book waiting for her to come out. then i come heome and it is family time. food home works playtime cooking time and everything else time bed by 8:30. my little guy needs me till he falls asleep.9-10:30, clean up, prepare for the next day clean up kitchen and by 10:30 -10:45 it is back to my books till1-00am. then wake up at 6:30.and the cycle begins. where do i make up for lost time, i don't play with my daughter anymore. don't watch TV with her. I have'nt played with my son as much as i used to with my daughter.i don't take them to chuckee cheeses, anymore. anywhere we need to go if my husband is home i send them off with him, but i don't go. I do'nt go to movies with my daughter.i take her to dance class with ear phones in my ears or with a book in hand or some flash cards in hand. when i do have to go shopping i have ear phones on listening to lectures. i go to the bathroom do'nt come out with out doing 3-5 q's. when my kids fall sick i give them all the time they need compromise on sleep do a little bit of light reading or Q's during that time take it as not lost time but q's time and dust it off and get back to where i was before it all happened. see the idea for me is to do a good first read however long it takes and then do quick reads later when i put my son in daycare in a couple of months and then concentrate on q's. when i fall sick i feel like the earth is coming apart ,!! I learnt this from my husband. however a bad flu he has or cold he will just pop a couple of tylenols and go to work b'coz he cannot let down the people there.of course when he goes to work h will not be able to give his 100% but atleast gives it 90% and then his co workers help him out too b'coz even one hand short causes mayhem in their ER.And then i started thinking if i was working is'nt this what i have to do too? and that Thinking solved my problem. i'm lucky thati'm at home when i sick. so i can get some rest. i pop n some tylenols for a day or 2 and then get back to my books. b'coz i have o make the best o f what i have. i totally understand how u feel.i don't know if what i have written is gonna help u or not honestly i started typing and i don't know if any of it makes sense to u i just wanted u to know that u r not the only ones who feels tjhis way i've spent years being that way and i don't want to that is why i have made the changes in my life that i have had to, they are tough desicions but u have to make them. Iwant to be there for my children when they are older when they hit puberty i don't want to be buried in my books then my daughter already feels that i am not spendidng enough time with her so i tell her once i finsh with the exams i will be able to do anything that she wants to. i tell her that when she is 8 yrs old i want to be able to go to movies with her and shopping with her and be her friend. and that is really what i want to do, be there for her then.right now she is still small and does'nt need me as much.i personally feel it is better to compromise now than when they are older and need us more and REMEMBER more. Janaki sick days will come in everyones life then we have friends who will drop in or relatives who will decide they want to visit us or we just have to go shopping. if u let all this get u down u will be waiting to write USMLE even after10 yrs. Don't let this get u down. down spend a week getting back on ur feet. pop in some tylenol and hit u r books. i'm not saying full time but atleast 2 hrs or even 1 hr. stay in touch with u r books. do q's if u cant focus and study. watchDVD;s they do not need too much thinking. For a mom or anyone with responsibilities THERE IS NO PERFECT STUDY SCHEDULE OR PERFECT TIME!!!! get that down. assimilate it. it might sound harsh but only u can make the desicion, how badly do u want this. i 'm telling u this b'coz i waited 10 ys for the perfect study environment until life HIT me big time in the FAce. there is never gonna be a perfect time for studying. get on with life, and studies.do what u can in the time u have.i am saying u should'nt aim high but i'm saying u have to learn to make the best of what u have it might take u longer than others but don't let the long turn in to years!!!!! so what 2 weeks are wasted right post pone u r exam by 2 weeks and read. if another 2 weeks get wasted postpone by another 2 weeks at some point u r going to get tired of 2 weeks postpone ment and u will make extra effort to get better in 10 days then 7 days then 3 days. just try it Janaki. Don't PANIC. Don'tGIVE up now. DOn't get FRUSTRATED. u r learning to ride a bike u have fallen off. dust ur self off get back on the BIKE. I don't know what else i can tell u i wish i had some one whack this into my head a couple of years ago but anyway no time for regretts i had to learn this all the hard way. i am only going to be praying for u. and i know u will get back on track. Just understand this Janaki. there is no PERFECT time for studying once u have responsibilities. this is a really long post might take up the whole page but i hoppe it helps u in some way. will be praying for u, all the best.

hey janaki well there is nothing like perfect study well dear please dont worry a lot well i cant give you a perfect plan but just one thing is that when things around are fine dont loose time study maximum because you have nikhil..you never know when will you loose time this really looks simple but just calculate how much time you can really use every day i guess you are doing quite well but for ur happiness i would say hey janaki try to read somemore time daily and there is no future in past so if u loose a day foget about it nobody here is doing things right on time so please dont worry now smile please and love you dude nikhiland dont worry if u loose a week hey here i am i lost 2 months and i cant match 2009 but still thats ok .....something nice in store for me may be

janaki, Every morning in Africa, a gazelle awakens. He has only one thought on his mind: To be able to run faster than the fastest lion. If he cannot, then he will be eaten. Every morning in Africa a lion awakens. He has only one thought on his mind: To be able to run faster than the slowest gazelle. If he cannot, he will die of hunger. Whether you choose to be a gazelle or a lion is of no consequence. It is enough to know that with the rising of the sun, you must run. And you must run faster than you did yesterday or you will die. This is the race of life." and i think there is no PERFECT DAY , it should be better than yesterday for OUR BETTER TOMORROW.... ~ supriya

Janaki, Realize that there are two things happening here, 1)you are really getting back in to studies, as a student, like once you were ! - this is a good sign ! 2) you are losing patience and getting nearer to losing hope -- really bad ! i saw in your previous posts, you were saying , ....................these thing i want to practise over months along with studing for few hours a day and then start real usmle . coz i realised i can survive without usmle but if one of the above things get messed up my son and my husband will get affaected and that troubles me more than not sdtudying for usmle """" you said " you can survive without usmle " ...........that might be tru earlier when u haven't started your prep, but its not anymore, studies are gaining equal importance in your mind with that of family needs as once they were ! and you are unable to take things which are wasting your time eversince you got in to that rythm, even if its the time wasted for nikhil or your hubby. Go through your journal since the beginning once, you have made a lot progress eversince you started the journal, in your first post to kalyann....you said ' you are getting hardly two hrs of study in a day " but later on, you figured out various things..and started saving time with lot of efforts........you have started waking up in the early morning, you started going to library, finding out nanny for nikhil...even with food.......you became so cautious ! can you imagine, all these things you acheived in just one month time !!!!!!! what else you want ?......thats a clear progress ! understand that You have no hurry to complete these exams, since you have husband to take care of your needs, and you have family who needs you, so prepare comfortably, but BE SURE....not to foget about the exams completely ! Onemore thing is, Instead of looking for study partners in your own state, look for them in other states too,.......becoz anyway, you are waking up around 4 or 5am, by that time 2 or 3 hrs wil b past in central/eastern timing states ..try to do atleast one hour of combined study, if those timings permit !........if not in the morning, you can also try day time ! you said, you cannot study during nights, even when you get one or two hours of free time........if you cannot use that time by your self, use study partner in those timings !, in that way..you can complete it fast ! do your first reading comfortably even when it takes time,...... you have just started the preperation, and you already started feeling the disappointment and relstelssnes whatever is intervening the preperation........ " these things will continue until you get in to residency" ... ..so just accept it and get used to it, since there is a long way to go, and you need to be patient, you need to maintain consistency ! you have been following poeple here, going down sometimes in their prep, and remember you were also dropping encouraging words to them to not to give up and not to lose confidence ! Dont think such disappointments or going down in prep....occurs when the prep is on fire, ...it starts since the beginning, and you are also facing it,....... just like bhanu said in my journal " it happens to every one " only thing i can add to to her saying now is " it happens to everyone, but in a different way, at different timings of prep " ! Be prepared for days like this in your prep.. " nikhil geting sick or something else " but what i want to say is, Just stay focussed, in the sense.........remember what you were studying the last week/two weeks back, and where you stopped it....you should able to get back to it, even when that one or two weeks get wasted ! Circumstances are different for each person in this forum. studying 12-14hrs a day, or completing the prep in 4months.........doesnt work for all ......these are the people who planned for it since they are in med school ! then.....their study, the books they followed.......everything involves their planning for usmle in future ! You are really doing great.....just keep doing it, without letting down your self confidence ...just dont lose the patince to maintain this consistency !

aaah, i forgot to say.....there is no such thing like " perfect study " and no definition too the one you were giving ! and one morething, everyday is different given your situation, so i think its better not to think of exam date until you complete first reading.

i am saying i'm sorry ,i meant to say"i am NOT saying u should'nt aim high but i'm saying u have to learn to make the best of what u have it might take u longer than others but don't let the long turn in to years!!!!! Usmle might not seem so important right now but just wait till nikhil goes off to school u will wish u could turn back the clock, but u cant. trust me i've been through that. we might feel it is not going to happen to me but at some point in our lives we all go through the same things in life, place time and situation maybe little different but the circle of life is the same. also wanted to add that children are the most imp people in our lives. we are doing this not only for ourselves but also for them to give ourselves and them a better future. also they learn from us so we have to set a good example for them to follow.. if they see us giving up what lessons are they gonna learn from us. i just remembered that u said Nikhil was the only person at u r grad how proud u must have felt and how proud he is gonna be at that fact when he grows up and realises. don't u want to add some more stuff for him to be proud about. Janaki cheer up ok. see we all are here for u. and we all are in this to gether. That is what this forum is about and that is what friends are for.we all have ups and downs and we all help each other.
