Dear Sir:

My name is Waqar Cheema, I am a final year student at Foundation Universtiy Medical college right here in rawalpindi. First Let me take this opportunity to congratulate on your success and praying that God will grant you more of the same!

Sir, I have a few Questions?

What is the difference between Goljan notes, review and rapid review and which one is good if good at all?

Where may I get Goljan Audios from because the Prince guy infront of the RMc doesn't seem to have them?

Sir, I did my robbins(Medium Version) well, so how can I make robbins my strength, as far as usmle prep is concerned?

Sir what advice would you give to me( I have always been a struggling student) as far as USMle is concerned? Like when to start!

Hi man.. im kinda stressing.. i did kaplan twice already.. and im trying out usmleworld.. and im averaging 50-60%.. all u guys are saying 86% making me feel like nothing lol.. im doin goljan audio.. goljan rapid review(i highlighted everything he mentioned in his audio).. i did all kaplan books except patho and micro.. i did mmrs for micro.. im averaging 50-60% on usmleworld.. do u think i should reread all of kaplan and goljan again? .. before i keep continuing with usmleworld?...

for a 99, what I have found from my fellows and friends. A big cohort that I have been watching lately, you should be above 70% in uworld and 75% on kaptest.

I wud suggest you to re read all the stuff from kaplan again and make short notes on the sides that you cant remember or you find interesting enough to revise again. Same case with Q banks... make small notes and next time just re read those notes. This helps a lot. It will create almost 10 score difference on your 3 digit score.

Identify your weaknesses in subjects. Which subject you need more time to work on. IF there is one, try finding some Brilliant person in that field and go to him and study with him. Clear your concepts really really weell as thats what is needed.

Goljan rapid review is the best source for pathology.

difference is that notes are brief while rapid review has far more knowledge

you can have goljan audios .. let me know ur phone number in pvt message

there is enough material in goljan rapid review to go with the step 1. you dont need to read robbins because Dr. Edward Goljan has taken that headache for you already and his book is a review of ROBBINS

you better start NOW!

@genbot

And how good is the kaptest? I mean in terms of resembling the actual exam.
You also say that u should revise NBME questions before taking the exam, what advantage is there to that?
I've already taken NBME4 and 3(this one before starting prep), would it help me to do forms 1&2 also?

I would say KAPTEST helped me. Although UWORLD helped me more.

I said about NBME because manyof the questions from there get repeated and it helps you to know the pattern.

All NBME questions resemble those of USMLE

NBME 4 give best correlation to USMLE scores, accordin to my COHORT of test takers. I have been watching many test takers and from my medical college, what I have found that people usually score 6-8 points less on 3 digit score correlation from NBME and almost 2 digits above NBME 4 score

my correlation scores do not match with NBME 4 because I was almost sleeping in the last two. I did them 1 week before my exam.

Ideally you should do 1 NBME every week in the last week starting 5 weeks eaerlier with NBME 1.

Assalam O Alacum Dear brother WaqasQureshi.....1st of all BIG CONGRATZ!!! on having having bagged a marvellous score in step 1....an inspiration for us indeed! I m Final Year Student in CHANDKA MEDICAL COLLEGE LARKANA, SINDH. I have been in touch with MLE even before my entrance test to MedSchool...BUT bcz of our outdated govt-sector education setup we cant attempt the exam before graduation...u better know that! Sir I would be glad if u suggest me further line of action to achieve my coveted objective.......MANSOOR AHMED BOUK
Walaikum salam , dear brother. Thank you for the wishes.

I would suggest you to start studying and become accilimitized with the KAPLAN series. Also want you to make notes of the HIGH YIELD points that are asked in vivas and are on boards. They both help for vivas and boards. I have been doin that since my first year and I gues that helped me. ALl of those tickyquestions are asked on step 1.

Also try completing the whole series once. I know the system of your college as someone from your college has been asking me for guidance for a long time and then he went through alhumdulillah. Please also pray for me and I am always there for anyguidance if you need me. Consider me your elder brother and dont get dishearted by your college. There are many graduates from your college abroad and they are doing well. message me in private if you need any help. take care

Thanks Waqas!
Yes i felt so too. NBME 4 seemed to me like the best predictor out there. I did it a few days back after my first read, scored 770. I've given myself a short prep time, my exam's in 18 days time. Hoping everything works out well. I'll keep your advice in mind. Thanks very much and good luck for your future ventures!

hi WagasQureshi

i m preparing for the step 1 right now..after knowing u did so amazing on the step, so i have a few questions that i have hope u can give me some suggestion on how to improve.

i did NBME 1 last night, i got 560....
1. how representative is this form compare to the real test?

2. i didnt find the questions hard, esp most of the questions are reflex question either i know it or i dont. But my questions, the questions i dont know, alot of them are not covered by the review books i used such as Goljian or kaplan. For example, intoxication of iron what will the side effect be...i looked up its GI bleeding or other questoins lik a person had gallstone and was removed and then the person felt colicky pain and absent of bowel sound and they were looking for whats the problem after, another example will be the treatment for AML that we commonly know can be treated by all trans retinol acid and goljian also mention that it helps to mature lymphocytes. But the answer choices were a) promote differenciate of lymphocytes b) promote monocyte to macrophage and then sth else.. anyway, what i m trying to say is since u scored perfect on the NBME and near perfect for the step 1, how did u study for those points that are not covered by those review. Can you give me some suggestions on how did u do it..cuz it certainly takes more than just studying hard to score high on this test and u mentioned in ur post that u only studied 5 hrs a day. please give me some points that u think i could do to boost up for the last month. thanks for your time and appreciate for ur help.

dear friend

I think the reason behind my scores wasnt that I studied from review books. What helped me the most was my background knowledge that I gained over the 5 years of medical education. There is no supplementation to that. You could go for Q BANKS and KAPLANS but they supplement you to the scores of 240s if you are perfect in them.I answered the questinos you are mentioning on the basis of what teachers told us in the classroom.

I am not sure what to tell you about improving this aspect as this will make almost 20% of all the questions on USMLE step 1, the ones you are mentioning reflex questions. All you can do is that do the Q BANKS and the review books thoroughly. that would be my suggestion

thanks for ur response

I think you should consider posting your score in the score thread. It would get lost otherwise.
