I should start with praise of Allah who made me reach this point. ALHUMDULILLAH. I started off for a journey of 4.5 months of prep. What I did was as under:

I did all kaplan books twice except behavior that I did once.I dint do kaplan pathology and anatomy
I did Goljan audios plus rapid review once
I did HY neuroanatomy but left it in the middle and did neuroanatomy from anatomy of kaplan once .. kaplan's is better than HY
I did HY HISTOLOGY twice and HY EMBRYOLOGY once
I did CT scans and MRIs from webpath
I did gross anatomy neuro from webpath as well
I saw pictures of robbins

I gues thats it

here are my scores

usmleworld: cumulative 88%
new Kaplan kaptest 86%
NBME 1 800
NBME 2 800
NBME 3 750
NBME 4 720

I dunno what else to write. in case anybody needs any help. Do let me know smiling face

I will be more than happy to help
All I remember is that when I was opening my result, I was prayin from my God. to grant me something good and that HE DID...believe me HE IS THERE and HE helps u .. only you have to turn to HIM. smiling face

Congrats on the great score. What was ur 3 digit score. Can u pls suggest what shud be done in the last month of exam ......like what to stress

  #3

here is what I recieved in my Email. I am replying here so that it might help others too

1)Regarding pathology: I have Goljan lectures and notes and kaplan of course , after listening to the lectures where should i study from (Goljan notes or Kaplan)?????????? I dont have rapid review , should i buy it ?????????
I mean which i most suitable for the exam and less time consuming????

goljan rapid reviewe third edition is time consuming
while kaplan doesnt take time. But I found Goljan MORE USEFUL for the exams. The tables of kaplan should be complemented with Goljan for the step 1

2)is immunology tested frequently on the exam, actually its alot in kaplan so are their certain important chapters??????
YEs it is tested frequently and it can range from 5 - 15% on the steps. You should better be prepared for it

3) which is better or closest to the exam type questions is that UW or kaplan Q bank or should i do both???????????? did u kaplan Q book................
I would say that do both. Most of the test takers say that both helped. Same in my case.
I didnt do Q book because much of it was repetition as told by my fellows plus I didnt have time for it

4) did u look at all the pictures on webpath or are their certain pictures that we must recognize for the exam?????

I didnt do all webpath and most of the people say that it doesnt help you much but as I have read a lot about the experiences of other people and I know what they have been studying so
Gross neuro pics
CT pics MRIs
EKGs
histology pics from Wheater's atlas/jinquera
and one rapid review of ROBBINS pictures would be fine with the exam. I had a lot of pictures. I didnt do these things even though I knew I had to do them but I didnt have time but if I had done them, that would have helped me.

I would suggest you to do at least 50-100 questions every day in the last month. Give a quick read to kaplan and repeat your UW and Kaplan questions that you have attempted wrongly.
Lastly in the last week you should go for first aid. Let me give you how you should go about it

START OF LAST MONTH ==> take kaplan simulated test
FIRST WEEK ===> first three days
50 questions a day. 2 to 3 days a subject
give more stress on what you scored lower on kaplan simulated
SECOND week start ===> take NBME 1 and 2

THIRD week starts ===> take NBME 3 and decide if you want to postpone your exam or not
if you arent delaying then go for
NBME 4 1 week before step 1
in the last week just do First AID.. nothing else

keep the routine of 50 questions a day constant. It helps you later.. rather I suggest to do 100 questions a day
during the last three days

keep one day for diagrams, CT MRI
one day for revising the notes you have written all along
one day for revising all the NBME questions

finish by 7 pm the last night. Dont sleep during the day otherwise you wont be able to sleep at night smiling face

in case you are going to delay your exam, dont delay just a week. Delay at least a month so that you can go through all the course once again.
if you dont have much time and you only delay a few days then it will ruin your scores. Mark my words smiling face

take care

  #13

MasahAllah Waqas mammoth score
u r graduate of which college?

  #14

CONGRATS!!!!! do you have any idea how the exam is scored? did you find yourself making lots of mistakes, but still got a great score. the reason i ask is because i just took my exam and made around 25 known mistakes, questions i knew.
thanks

replying to this email here.

I remembered almost all of my questions and wrote down those 340 something questions to check the answers, I made 5 known mistakes and all of them were very silly ones. They were step 2 questions though but still I should have known them as I am a graduate student

  #15

@nayef2000

for molecular biology HY histology and HY molecular bio is good.
Some background knowledge also helps with the exam though but thats the best you could do after kaplan Q bank

  #16

@maoudoody

I wasnt able to study more than 5 hours even till end as I was doin my internship alongwith the studies.
But 5 hours well spent are better than good.

this is all relative. Never go with the study hours. my friends have been studyin for like 16 hours -8 hours and the scores come alike. So it all depends how much you can retain, in how much time. The norm of every person is different so KNOW YOURSELF and suit yourself... my max exertion used to be 3-4 hours a day in my final exams so 5 hours is above what I have been exerting in my professional examinations so I would suggest you to work 110% of what you usually can do

if your normal is 10 hours make them 11 hours smiling face dont forget to do exercise and sports..

@ dr_ayyad I am Waqas Tariq Qureshi

I am from Rawalpindi Medical College, Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Graduated last year.

I have a few friends from jordan too from the medical university of jordan. I did electives with them. they were really great guys. what I think helped me in this exam was NO DOUBT help from Allah. May be this might look spiritual to many of us but there is no doubt that He helped me through the paper. I have been reciting the prayer of Hazrat Younus before every question and believe me it went through like a breeze.

secondly, I have been studying the american books since the beginning of my medical school and have been visiting this forum since my second year MBBS. I became aware of the type of questions and used to study those things that are asked on the boards My teachers are also american certified and they helped me through as well...

thank you so much for the wishes. I have been a silent observer of all of you especially step99 and MRMAVERICK. thanks a lot for being there.

if you need any kind of guidance or help, please do let me know.

I am currently located in Pakistan but will be taking off to USA in a couple of weeks perhaps. So, I might not be able to reply to this forum after that.

another thing. My biggest mistake was to study FA late in the last week before step1 smiling face

I regret that but alhumdulillah I remembered it although it took a lot of time to study it. I completed it in 5 days but it paid off really really well

  #21

Awesome score man!

One thing i want to ask u, which NBME form do u think resembles the actual exam pattern the most?
When did u do NBME4 ?

  #23

And how good is the kaptest? I mean in terms of resembling the actual exam.
You also say that u should revise NBME questions before taking the exam, what advantage is there to that?
I've already taken NBME4 and 3(this one before starting prep), would it help me to do forms 1&2 also?

Congratulations once again for an unbelievable score!smiling facenod
